Crab season in Northern California and Oregon is delayed for the same reason. Migrating whales get caught in crab pot lines.

Nets are not used to catch lobsters. Okay, technically, there is some netting within the lobster pot (trap), but it is not something a whale would get tangled in. Pics below of a modern lobster pot, as well as some old wooden ones. They are only about 18 inches tall, and sit on the sea floor. A whale will not get in those nets inside the trap! Maybe they are concerned with whales getting caught in the line that is attached to the lobster pot and goes up to the float? That is not a net, and is much less likely to cause entanglement, but I suppose it's possible.

This does seem like overkill since no right wale fatalities have ever been witnessed. No mention of nets anywhere in the linked article. The only place nets are mentioned is in your subject line. What am I missing?

Wait...hold on...are you guys looking for logic and common sense here? There will ne none of that nonsense! It gets in the way of corporate virtue signaling!

They're saving the planet here...we can't have any intelligence being applied.

It's my understanding there has never been a reported case of a whale getting caught in Lobster gear???

Along the same lines of the 'turtle excluder devices' required on shrimp nets around here. Lose loads of shrimp every drag so the greenies feel good about saving one or two turtles a year along the entire coast.
