My Montego came with the original stairs that were blemished on the sides and had the veneer cap wearing off. The sides were OK, but I was not happy. I cut a groove in the original sides and sistered in new plywood to change the profile. My original idea was to have a radius to the stairs and I spent a couple bills trying to laminate and curve teak caps. This was beyone my skill level so I gave up. I then put the new profiled stairs in the boat and realized that the access to the dinette was hindered. I then made a new profile, keeping some of the new wood and removing some of the original. I was not too keen on the original shape to begin with. This led to making a 3 piece cap and I am really happy with the results. This is all old growth Burmese teak that is similar to the teak original to the boat. No more flimsy veneer tops to flake off. Tomorrow I am making some doors for the bottom two stairs which will be helpful in keeping things in their place while under way. I also took the time to add a beefed up cleat for more secure attachment to the bulkhead. I'll post a picture of the unit when doors are complete and in the spring when I re-carpet the boat (if I don't upgrade first).

Looks really good Jim! What about teaking the step treads also instead of carpet?

Ideally, I would teak the entire cabin sole and stairs. I have enough reclaimed teak (1950's chris craft salvage) to do it. However, my dogs go with me everywhere and they don't do wood floors too well due to knee and hip problems. I think the carpet will offset the abundance of teak also. I thought about using the teak veneer I have and doing the walls in it, or at least the lower cabinets. It would look really rich, and I like darker colors in small areas, but it might be too costly, especially for this boat. If I decide to paint her and keep her for a while, I just might.

Chef,

Looks great. I remember the stairs in our 3257; they were still in great shape when we sold the boat. As to your comment about the dinette, we removed ours and replace it with a sofa bed that I constructed. I also made a table for dining that could be folded and stored when underway. The changes really opened up the saloon.

I know what you mean about the dogs and wood floor. We had a 15 year old Labradoodle who didn't do our cherry flooring too well. Unfortunately, we just had to put him to sleep 3 weeks ago...worst thing I've ever had to do and miss him terribly. We are looking for another Labradoodle, but may wait a while

Where did you put the AC unit?

Mike,

My AC is up front and this sounds like a great project to me. Did you have the raised dinette platform? I think the first year they were all the way down. I have often thought about putting an L shaped lounge there with the l running back at the aft bulkhead.

Do you have any old pictures?

Thanks,

Jim

So very sorry to hear about your dog. I can't imagine how hard that is to do.

A/C went under the sofa. Chef, as I recall, no raised platform. It was a 1988 3257.

Now the cubby hole doors are installed. I will install the old carpet tomorrow (temporarily).

Jim
