I will make this as simple as I can, although it does not seem very simple...LOL

Upon spring launch there was no steering, all the wheel did was spin. The mechanic bled the hydraulic system all seemed well.

In the last 3 days of a 2 1/2 week trek on the Trent-Severn Waterway, I noticed fluid coming from the helm just to the rear of the steering wheel. I made it to a marina on Rice Lake but they knew nothing about hydraulic steering and just filled the reservoir, repressurized it and sent me on my way.

I had to make my way home with no rudder control, just trim tabs and engine power. Am I ever glad it is twins.

Upon arriving back at my home marina the mechanic determined it required a seal kit of which he then installed, but.....

Now he can not bleed the system, he says it seems something is blocking the fluid lines and he is recommending I replace the complete helm unit. At the cost of over $1000. because my unit, Hynautic H-50 is no longer made, and he has to replace the piston cylinder as well as the unit.

Any body have any idea about these?

Thanks

Just replaced the seals on mine last year, really easy to do.
You have to bleed your hynautic system as discribed in the link above. You may have to do this more than one time to get all the air out of the system (make sure you have enough oil in the reservior), time consuming but eventually it will start to work.

If your helm unit needs replaced and you're not the type to do the mechanicals, there is a company in North Carolina that I sent my helm unit to for a rebuild. I believe it cost me $160. I had called Hynautics and they recommended them to me as they no longer carried the parts needed for a rebuild-much cheaper than a whole new unit. If you need more info, I can check and see who it was.

I had the same issue on my boat with the same Hynautic system. I sent my helm unit down to that place in Florida (linked above) and they had it back to me in just over a week. My mechanic at the time put it all back together and said it was a pain to bleed the system and had to do it several times and was a lengthy process to get it all bleed out. But, now it works great. Depending on where yours is located vs. the helm, an extra person helps to watch one end of it.

Not sure if BoatFix.com carries the oil, but I know WM carries it. I keep a spare with me, but haven't needed it since fixing it.

Boaterstore did my in 2010 but I had moved the lower helm pump upstairs to keep going so when I got the unit back from them I mounted it at the lower and have never used it. Sounds like to me your guy didn't install the rebuild kit correctly.

Good Luck
Niles
