Wow - this couple survived 39 hours in the water before their rescue

Note to self: stay away from that dive shop.

Back when I was diving there were no gps locator devices for divers like there is today. We never made a dive without the 8' inflatable safety sausage, a whistle, signal mirror, and a strobe. This article reads as though these "experienced" divers had nothing more than a light.

Same, although I don't remember having a strobe. Did some night dives where upon first surfacing it was a little difficult to become oriented, but always managed to.

They were on the surface and the line was too short. They had no extra to throw out? They lost sight of them?

The way I read it they were on a down line, unknown to us what depth, released grip, could not get back to the line. Hard to say how far they were when the surfaced.

They are lucky to be alive.
Dive operator failed in a big way!
Big question here is why didn't they do a head count before heading back to the dock? Must be more to the story....

When ever I travel I tear the a note ( what ever currency they use) in half and give 1/2 of it to the deck mate or person in charge of the boat and tell them they will get the other half when I get back onboard.
They are usually waiting by the ladder for me to surface to get the rest of their tip.

What's the difference ????? It's not a pond or lake !!

Geographical correctness is the difference. Would you be okay if they said Pacific Ocean or Indian Ocea instead of Gulf of Mexico? None of those are a pond or a lake, either.
Some of us accept the the dumbing down of America, and some of us do not. Schools need to teach at least basic geography.
