Crusader 350XL's. Everything's great on this boat, but the Starboard engine is now overheating. Impellers have been replaced. Risers too. My mechanic believes there is a clog or part failure somewhere along the line - either oil cooler, heat exchanger or both. We can get to the heat exchanger, but in true Carver fashion (can't get to so many parts), the oil coolers are under the engines and can be reached by only one hand (and like most boat mechanics, our's is quite the contortionist).

Our Carver Mariner 330 cant be the only one that's needed to check and/or replace the oil coolers. I'm wondering if anyone can offer some clues (short of removing the engine).

You might want to go over to the engines forum. This really isn't a Carver issue and you will get a lot more response there. There are numerous brands of boats with parts that are just as hard, or harder to access.

That's a good idea - I'll post there as well. Thanks.

That being said, this forum is also quite appropriate. Many Carver owners (including myself) have found that Carver boats in particular often present uniquely difficult challenges in accessing parts in need of maintenance or replacement. This is one of those challenges - so, yes, it is indeed a Carver issue, especially in the manner in which Carver installed the oil coolers. I'm hoping to hear from Carver Mariner 330 owners who may have encountered this challenge and found a solution (short of removing the engine).

Thanks again for the response and suggestion.

Larry, I too have a 330 Mariner. I too had a problem with the engine over heating. My fault was within the seacock. The outer handle indicated movement. BUT, the inner components did not move. The ball valve was open approx. 10%..... Tough one to find since there is a 90% elbow on the seacock. Had to watch shaft while moving. Handle spun and did not move the shaft. Good luck.

Wow - hadn't thought of that one. Eyeballing the seacock it certainly appears open. I'll make sure we take a closer look (if it ever stops raining around here). Thanks much!!

As a boat mechanic myself...if you think Carvers are hard to work on...look in the bilge of a Sea Ray, especially in the same size range!

Make sure all your sea cocks are able to open and close freely. I just had a full survey done and that is a major issue for insurance, as well as for safety in the hazardous event you need to close them quickly. I had to change one out.

are you boating in fresh or salt water? growth (barnacles, mussels, etc) could be reducing water flow through the external strainers.

Larry, I own same boat and year. Entire deck is removable in about 1/2 hour. This gives you complete access to all components. I removed mine in 1/2 hour. You will need another person to lift it up. You can leave on boat or completely remove off boat. Call me for instructions 516-672-8918. Thanks Bob Figlia

Update - We got the exchanger apart and low and behold it was clogged with gunk. Cleaned it out and cooling system is working fine.

Thanks everyone for responses and advice.
