I've had some blank days with my Catfish trot lines.
I used a 'store bought' concoction, my own mix, chicken livers, and finally someone said: "put what they eat" on the hooks.
I dont like messing with live bait, but in desperation....

So I went to the local fishing store. Right on the water. I figured they'd have what I wanted.
They did. Lordy, they also need a De-fibberolater for the customers Heart when he hears the Price.

A Dollar Apiece! For Shiners and Goldfish. Two of the most prolific fish on the planet. A BUCK apiece!
It must take a lot of Gasoline to catch them shiners.

A couple years ago I took some kids out fishing and bought two dozen Shiners for $0.75 Cents a dozen.

I looked at the kid and said: "That sure makes a $35 casting net look like a good deal!

And still the Shiners were gone the next morning but the Gold fish were still alive. And no Catfish!

Thud,
I make trips out to my boat regularly to put bait in the pen and then go fishing on the weekends...this way I have all the bait I need and save the $$$ on bait. Of course I probably spend more in gas but I have the best bait possible!

Do you really use goldfish as bait? My local pet store sells feeder goldfish for .10 cents apiece and 50 for $3.50.
Get the net!

Perry that Tropical fish store is probably where I should have went then.
I'm headed to WalMart to look at a Throw net!

they probably have the feeder goldfish too in their pet dept...throw the cast net there.

In saltwater, finger sized mullet are everywhere. Throw a new a couple times and you have all you want. Same with Pogey/Menhaden.
The mullet stay alive longer in the live well than the Pogey will.

LOL, WalMart has a 3.5' Cast net for $20.
I changed my mind. Bought some Shad in a package. They didnt work either.
I have a Minnow Jug. I could probably put that out in the lake and fish around it. There are just gobs of bait clouds up on the surface here.

Thud,
One more of these posts and we're coming down there to help you out! Went to check out my boat after Hanna past...my boat is near the end of the marina...as I'm removing the leaves and debris I hear some splashing from the next dock...a freakin hardtail hung itself on a artificial that was snagged to the dock. Jeez these fish catch themselves...
Just thinking of you...Be the fish Thud...be the fish....
Tight lines,
Perry

I quit on Smith lake.
I'll wait till winter before I go there again. I'll get my little boat with the Rowing seat ready for the Small lake downtown. More fish I hope.

I might make a wooden fish trap that floats or similar to put out in the lake and catch bait fish for me.
Cool sounding projet eh?

Perry during the Salmon run up the Green river (Duwamish) in Seattle the Silvers would sometimes jump right in the boat. Women who go out to catch one, will scream like they are being attacked when one jumps right up in her lap!

Now that's fishing! Saves on all that pesky tackle too...
