Ablative Paint life??

I bottompainted a 180 FourWinns last spring. Used Aquaguard plus. I sanded, wiped with required solution, primed with waterbased primer(2coats) and then painted 3 coats of ablative paint. Followed the instructions on the cans totally! It was in the lake for 4 months and ran weekly if not more. When I pulled it out, there were dime sized areas of bottom paint missing. Primer is still there. What happened?

Not familiar with the brand of paint you used. We have Awlgrip on a 2004 Tiara. It was painted at the factory and the smile was touched up this spring. It will get a fresh coat of ablative paint next March and should be good for another three years. Paint that comes off in chunks means there is something on the hull or directions were not followed as closely as you think. There could have been too little or too much time between the coats of paint. BTW, Awlgrip requires just two coats of paint and no primer. Five coats sounds like way too many. Could that be the problem?

I used the same stuff and followed the same routine but I trailer my boat (it had paint on it when I bought it) and whenever I put it in and take it out of the water if it bumps the trailor the paint comes right off but I do see the primer (silver color) below. I sent an e-mail to the company and a guy called me in disbelief about it coming off so easy and said he would look into it. He did offer me another gallon of paint and I am about to call him back.
