a sticky for your forum?

I was just thinking that maybe you could create a sticky that would give people the heads up about chosing a surveyor, maybe a link to SAMS or any other places that may benifit someone that is looking to have a boat surveyed.

Maybe some info on why a new boat survey is well spent money, and that maybe before a boat goes out of warranty a survey may be a good idea.

Hey, I used you because of all the great feedback about you on this site as well as following your posts. Some of us may not be in your region so your expertise to help them find the right surveyor (in the form of a sticky, so you only have to post it once) would be great.

Walter

Walter, My website address has all the information your talking about at the base of every post i make. I do need to find a new site designer to make changes to my website to include creating a data base for new boat owners. The reminder sent out when the warranty is coming close to ending whould be a wonderful addition. Thanks for looking out for me, as always.. Al

What type of database publishing services does your web host support Al? I could probably help you out. I do that kinda stuff all the time. Mostly with Microsoft Frontpage and Microsoft Access databases. Sending out time based e-mails might be a little tricky without a dedicated mail server. Your web site hosting company might be able to help there.

Rick, I have to say when it comes to website building and modification im not any good at it. Ill check with my hosting company and see what they have to say. Thanks as always for posting.

Al,

If you could build a database that would allow users to drill down to specific problems you found by "X" ("X" = engine, hull, fit and finish, etc....) it would be well worth a premium fee to me. As I dream about the next boat, I would be able to statistically rule out certain makes and models due to inherent problems you found.

My 2 cents.

David, That sounds like a great idear! Ill have to see how busy i am this winter and spend some time on that.

Al, maybe a Q & A sheet would be a good idea? That way, the buyer could ask the surveyor pertinent questions before and after the survey. KiDa's idea would be great, but the time needed would be extreme. After all that work, you'd have enough info for a Boating FYI Book, publish it and sell it to suveyors? Not a good idea, your knowledge and experience is too valuable and not worth giving away and the book would cost too much! A "do it yourself home survey manual" I think not. We need to keep you guys busy doing surveys.

I wouldn't worry about putting Al out of business a bank or insurance company would never accept a do it yourself survey. Also even the most seasoned mariner never minds a second unbiased opinion from a pro when it comes to purchases as large as a boat. Keep up the great work Al.
Regards Bill

BillyIII, I didn't really mean a do it yourself home survey manual, end of sentence says it. It was some tongue in cheek humor! What I was trying to get across was. Most banks, marine finance companies, insurance companies and the like, just want a survey. My experience has been they don't usually look beyond the paperwork as to the surveyor's qualifications. Anyone can call themselves a surveyor. If Al gathered all his information and gave it away, even for a fee, there'd be more pseudo-surveyors out there than there are now. Al has done his time and earned respect as a surveyor and I'm sure he'll agree. As have the other gentlemen/ladies that do this. It's a tough job and we need them. As for second opinions, they run the gamut, just ask Al or his buddy Fred, but they sure are nice to have.
I just thought a Q&A sheet would maybe help buyers on their purchase. A new boater moving up to a vessel that requires a survey can be blind sided and he needs all the help he can get. It was just a thought.
Hope all is well in "Clam Town"
BillyIII know's the reference, I'm sure!
