Looking to change my rope to 8 plait. Any thoughts on changing anchor to claw type?

joe the type of anchor you need is really indicated by the type of bottom you are typically going to encounter in your area. if you are not sure about the bottom conditions, find out where the local proffesional skippers are and ask them. also ask them for their anchor type preference and why. there are alot of opinions on the type that will work best in your application. that said, the anchor rode/depth ratio and how much chain you have will have more to do with the holding power than anything else.

joeregal,

Being a current Cruisers owner, but a very satisfied former Regal owner, I'm going to butt in here and suggest that you post this question on the Ask the Captain forum. Anchor rode discussions posted there will generate a lot more responses than on the Regal forum; besides the question isn't really too Regal specific.

I've used 8-plait line from Yale on my Maxwell windlass for years. It's very soft and pliable. It lays down in the rope locker very nicely, but since its softer than 3-ply it can be subject to chafing. I'd recommend a good length of chain between it and whatever anchor you choose to protect it.

Anchors? Vic gave some sound advice. I've used a Spade anchor for the past 12 years, but today I just ordered a new Rocna. Where we drop the hook, a plow type anchor suits our needs better than a claw.

Good luck.

Len: I looked at the Rocna site and it is impressive. Convinces me! All I have to do now is decide on 3 strand or 8 plait.

Joe,

If you have a windlass, or intend to install one, the manufacturers might have a preference on the rope. Lewmar and Maxwell prefer 8 plait like Yale's Brait.

My Rocna arrived today; only a couple more months before I can try it :(

Predicting -1°F tonight at my home!
