Because I dont think I can reliably use the inside route because of draft I will use Hawk channel. It has been years since I used Angel fish creek and I remember that the entrance from the Hawk channel was quite shallow. I draw 4.5' and looking at the charts wondered if angelfish or any of the Rhodes channels were preferable.

Anglefish is fine, ixnay on the others. Go in on a rising tide and keep in the middle of the very narrow marked channel. I went out through there a couple of weeks ago with 5 foot draft about an hour before high tide. Better yet, with 41/2 feet you should be fine inside from Channel 5 or Indian Key onward according to my notes from last year and more importantly a few people who have done it recently. Much prettier with more things to do. We're headed back down in a couple of weeks or so and I'll report back. Call the USCG in Islamorada and the towing service of your choice down there; one or all are usually pretty good about giving the latest scoop and best routing.

with 4 1/2 you'll be fine on the inside, you cna cross at Channel Five, Indian Key and also Snake Creek.

it's a nice route with plenty of anchorages along the way. Been years since i went thru angelcreek, woudn't try it with anything over 4' except on high tide

P:
so you dont recommend the inside all the way???

I did not enjoy the trip from Islamorada to Marathon on the inside, pretty as it was; too skinny and way too many crab/lobster pots in the channel. While we didn't run aground per se, we sanded the keel pretty nicely. You're not going to hear many rave reviews of that stretch from people with more than 4 feet of draft. From Key West to Marathon, you can anchor in Newfound Harbor and Bahia Honda and have tons of fun on the dinghy exploring the inside.

On the other hand we really enjoy cruising on the inside from Channel 5 east/north. Lingnumvitae Key, Shell Key, Matecumbe Bight (Islamorada), Tarpon Basin, Pumpkin Key (Ocean Reef), Elliot Key are all favorite anchorages or moorings. I haven't been there myself, but people speak highly of Plantation Key as a marina destination.

As of two weeks ago, Anglefish was not an issue for us with 5 feet at all, just mind the channel and take your time (so what else is new?).

agree with George... up to Channel 5/long key the inside is great. after that, there isn't as much to see so you may as well be outside.

Just saw a couple of items on saltys cruisetnet about boats hitting a rock near the east side of the Angelfish channel.

Went thru Anglefish Creek last week, plenty of water on both sides.

Saw another big manta ray jump out of the water, that's two now, almost the same spot.

what do you draw and how was the tide when you crossed?

Yeah, I saw that posting from the Clairborne Young site today. Certainly the posters have no reason to make that up, so any obstruction must be pretty narrow (like my personal snag near the Little River Bridge in SC ):O( ) . I was pretty much dead center when I went through, as the channel is narrow there; perhaps I was a little more on the south side. I draw 5ft+ and the tide was a foot and a half up and rising.

I'm planning a trip south from Englewood Fl. I'll probably go out at Sanibel and stop at Marco Island for fuel. What is the best way to get to John Pennicamp State Park, or where there is some nice anchorage exploring and snorkeling? Any suggestions? Planning on staying on the hook. I'm a little rusty reading the charts but I'm ready to get back into it. Leaving Englewood, stop at Sanibel, stop at Marco, stop at Flamingo if they still have a fuel dock, stop at Key Largo. Or should I go to the Seven Mile Bridge, then head back to Key Largo? Looking for a nice scenic route. Let me know wat you guys think.

It's been since 01 when I was there. I suspect you are going outside the Capes of Romano? We did about 14 miles offshore. Wind was out of the West and we had a short chop of 6'+ on the beam. Also be sure of your entry into Marco. We made the mistake of coming in after dark without having a GPS route planned. Bad move!
Others will chime in with more recent info I'm sure. I'm jealous!

Hi Froggy,
Yes. I intended on going around Capes of Romano.Your trip sounds like my last attempt to do this in 02. Same seas, Went south the next morning heading for Marathon and blew up my engine 7 miles south of Marco. Water up the exhaust. Don't be jealous! Just start planning! I started a new thread to get some fresh information. Thanks for the info!
