I knew the bay would be rough after 4 days of strong south winds but I never expected the waves we saw. We were pretty good from montauk up past Sag thru peconic. Alot of wind, but no waves. We were good thru lock, then up into Tiana and thru moriches.

But then we got into the GSB by patchogue and it was like someone just opened up the door. Wind and swells and some of the swells where 5 foot easily.

I thought my boat my come apart so I slowed down. My Canvas snaps were coming open. My grill flew from it's spot up on the bridge down the stairs. Things in cabin found a new home. It was ugly, but we made it back in last night safe and sound.

In all my boating years, never saw that large swell in the GSB. Docking was easy with the IPS in turbo mode! In docking mode, the boat didn't even move! LOL! Lesson learned!

Dave,

Glad you guys made it back ok. The ocean was very nasty yesterday as well. Looked a lot calmer this morning.

Issue was moriches, high tide was 4:41 yesterday and about a hour later today.
Early morning is out since bridges don't open till 6.
So it was late day either day.
We heard today was more of the same with the wind, so we decided to go for it.
In hindsight, today may of been a better day to travel.

Great south bay can become, or is, a real washing machine..too many hard surfaces to bounce off.. especially in bayshore. It was amazing the see the breakers in the "new/old inlet" as we went east on Friday..

It's been a rough few days. I was out Saturday for most of the day and evening and the wind was pretty strong. It's been at least that strong or worse every day since.
My son has been sailing the last 3 afternoons, and again this evening at Amityville. Wind was actually howling when I picked him up late yesterday afternoon. I think the kids are nuts, but they love it like this because it makes those little boats fly.
The tides have seemed a little lower than usual too.

We used to keep our 24' Chaparral in Bluepoint and cruise and fish in GSB. My wife swore there had to be a seamonster under the boat rocking it from side to side, even when there was no real wind. That's one of the reasons we moved to Eastport in Moriches Bay, shallower but much calmer. Now if I could only get the boat running correctly. Hy
