BVI is usually a very safe place for blue-water boating - that's one of the reasons why it is so popular. This was really a rare event.
The only truly bad day I remember on the Delta was about 8 years ago when my starboard engine overheated on my previous boat, a Regal 292 overheated about 2 miles east of Antioch. I had to limp back home on the port engine (which of course had the power steering pump) on one of those vicious windy April days. I was able to manhandle it into the marina, but with one engine and no power steering, I kept getting blown past my slip before I could turn the boat. Fortunately, someone on the dock was able to get a long line to us. TO this day, I bless the concept of twin engines.
