Never saw so much action in the canal that I'm slipped in. The bait fish are churning up the water, sounds like a battle going on. Must be Tarpon or big Jacks chasing the smaller fish.
Wonder if the recent hurricanes have any thing to do with the abundance of bait fish that have come into the canals.
Iv got to practice my net throwing.

Around here, the sudden influx of rain and water flow in the shallow bayous etc stirred up the nutrients in the waterways, resulting in a bloom. More algae, more little aquatic thinghys, more bait shrimp, more fatter bait shrimp, more small fishies, more bigger fishies, followed by the large predators: guys w/ nets and fishing gear... ;)

I wish I had some of your bait fish. Up here they are selling for a Buck apiece down at the lakeside Marina's.

Thud, I lived in Huntsville for more than 20 years. I've fished Smith and all the other waters of N.AL. extensively. You've got a number of small feeder creeks in your area. Get a small bait cast net and hit the little pools below bridges and other places. You'll find many of them have plenty of good shinners and other "baits". You can find baits plenty big for stripers or small enough for crappie. We almost never paid for bait. Also, if you can find someone with a small stock pond, not used for fishing, you may find it full of small sun fish. We also raised our own shinners in these little ponds. they grow and reproduce fast if you feed them. ( BTW-- watch out for Mr. No Shoulders around those creeks....

I lost my Cast net in a move. I never even got to use it the first time.
I think I'll try Bill D's method. I have a pond available. Maybe I can net some with my long handled landing net?
If not, I have a shiner jug I can try.
Thanks guys.
