Does anyone know the channels used by barges on the Hudson? I watched the other day two large barges passing in opposite directions within 50 feet from each other off Kingston Point -- with a stiff NE breeze. Wondering how they do that and would like to listen in.

I believe channel 13 is used for commercial ship-to-ship communication.

Channel 13 it is.

They are required to monitor it.

13 is the channel, They can also be heard on 16 announcing where they are at times...

Yep, they use 13, if you can, you should add it to the channels you scan. They will anounce their name ("Exxon Lady") what they are, ("loaded oil barge"), where they are, ("Jones Point"), and what their destination is ("bound for Albany").

Thanks. Just programmed 13 into my VHF. Does anyone use 69 the HRCC channel -- I've got it programmed but have not heard anyone use it.

Most of us probably have channel 69 programmed to scan, along with others. I, for one, don't usually "chat" while boating, unless we are cruising with other boats and need to communicate.

I use 69 in our area, 68 is WAY too overused. Unfortunately, some of my fellow dockmates have not come to this realization yet - but I'm working on them...

I scan, 9, 13, 16, 22, 68, & 69

Can be a PITA sometimes. I keep the handheld at the helm when I need to be on more than 1 channel at a time like waiting for a bridge.

John, I scan those same channels and I also keep a handheld ready at the helm...

I listen to 13 all winter long. The tug captains seem to talk more then, maybe beacuse none of us are on the water making them nervous! I heard a few conversations last winter that were a hour plus long. It's fun.

Well thats the problem Judy, you are suppose to be boating in the summer, not the winter...Quess thats why we never see you...We are out there the wrong seasons!

Your a riot Butch! Actually this is the first weekend we have not been on the boat this year. Drove down the shore for a wedding yesterday and had to drive back last night. Just hung out at home taking it easy today.

13 is also the channel that the NYS Canal System uses. We had a french canadian drive his 33' sea ray up on to the sea wall in front of our marina a few weeks ago. We were all yelling out to him and on the radio..... of course none of us realized until finding out later later that the guy didn't change to a working channel for the tidal Hudson and was still on 13. From now on I am monitoring 13 on my scan also.
