What are the Barges or Tankers on the Hudson River anchored around 125th Street/Ave ?

We spent the weekend in lower manhattan. My eyes were drawn to the barges while driving in and out of the city.

They are designated anchorage areas on the charts.

I believe they are used as stagging and holding areas for the commercial barges. Actually if you look closely you can see the crews out on deck BBQing and enjoying some sun! ;)

Parking problem. Apparently designated anchorages in NY Harbor are all occupied so ships have to come more up river. You can even spot three or for across from Yonkers...I guess parking's tight in the city.

When fuel prices were increasing daily, the owners of the fuel barges would anchor them there watching their investment skyrocket. Now maybe they just can't get rid of it. Over the summer, they were anchored all the way up to Yonkers.

The tug companys don't like it any more than we do when the fuel goes up ,it affects them as much as us . Only the big oil companys make the ca$h not the tug co.

jon, how could they not like it, they are getting paid for the tug to sit there tied to the barge. If they weren't making money, they wouldn't do it.

I'm sure the rental for the barge ain't cheap, either.

Well the best I can explin it to you here is yea they get paid , but most coampnys are private . Reasons they sit in the special - anchorages , or staging areas are many and could be anything from a tanker delay to a refinery problem and too much for me to get into.
Picture it like this the more fuel they burn the more it costs them , just like us , the oil demmand is higher this time of year ,the tugs co.'s do not set the oil price.

Makes sense. I wasn;t sure if they had an underwater pipeline to offload liquids although I knew it would be unlikely.
