A friend wants to take the train north from the city and meet me in either Beacon or Peekskill. My question: which town has a dock that's closest to the train station? Does Beacon have a dock -- I know of the ferry dock, but could someone tie up briefly and pick-up someone there?

Peekskill has the town park which has a ramp and some docks. It's right across from the train station. Or, you can call Peekskill Yacht Club and I'm sure they'll be fine with a pickup.

Thanks for the tip. Also considering Poughkeepsie which I understand there is a municiple dock a short walk from the Metro North Train station.

I can't really help you there. Goto maps.google.com and look for poughkeepsie. It appears there is a dock a short walk from the train station. I imagine you could quickly use the ferry dock as long as you don't interfere.

Yep, there's Victor Waryas Park and within or near there I am told there's a dock for quick usage. It's a short walk from there to the train station.

Rather than pick up in Poughkeepsie I would have him stop at New Hamburg and walk over to White's Marina - about 3 minutes - and meet him at the gas dock. Just my $0.02.

Bill, your boat should have no trouble picking up someone in Peekskill if you want to try that - we did it years ago in my 28 and barely made it, but a 21 should have no problems, especially if you tilt the drive up a bit...

If not, George has a good suggestion about New Hamburg. Although if you're in Kingston I can see why you might want to find something closer. Isn't there some sort of train station across from the Rondout??? What is that structure on the east shore of the River???

'Not sure where you're coming from, Bill; if you're in the Newburg area, Garrison Station is also right accross from the docks at Garrison Landing. The boat club docks at Cold spring are a very short walk from the train station, too. Further south, Tarrytown station is just across the parking lot from the marina.

Hope this helps.

Pete: I've checked that dock across from the Rondout and you can surely pick someone up there, though on a choppy day, it would be a real challenge. The stop in Rhinecliff is an Amtrak stop, not Metro North who's last stop is in Poughkeepsie.

Thanks all again for your suggestions! Looks like the esiest would be either New Hamburg or Poughkeepsie -- both train stops are close to the shore with docks as far north as I like. Hope to see you out there this week (quite a stretch of beautiful days ahead!).

Actually, now that Cold Spring is mentioned...the town dock at Cold Spring is very easy to get into and no charge or hassles. The walk from the station down to the river is relatively short and down hill. I'd say Cold Spring might be your best bet. FYI, if anyone is thinking of doing Tarrytown, the dock at Striped Bass is easy to get into and the train is literally right across the street.

I'm voting for Cold Spring which is in between Peekskill and Poughkeepsie.

How the heck do you get a boat to that Cold Spring dock??? Or are you talking about the Boat Club dock nearby???
