Staying over this Friday (6-13-08).
Any experiences to share?
Cocktails at Kleins a good idea?
Best bars with dockage, etc?

Enjoy the trip. I've never docked there but I intend to go there this season for a few days after seeing the Belmar Video. Please post your impressions & suggestions after the trip.
Tks

I keep my boat at the Belmar Municpal Marina - so I am very familiar with the area.

There aren't too many places for you to dock & dine, let alone dock and drink. Kleins has room for 1 or 2 boats - they now have a liquor license and they serve the freshest fish around - I highly recommend the place. There's a nice bar called Sunsets, just north of the route 35 bridge - I don't believe you can dock there, but if you're docked at the Municpal Marina, Sunsets is in walking distance. Otherwise, just walk east from the marina and within 2 blocks you'll be in downtown Belmar - lots of nice little places to eat and drink.

I expect to be at the marina on Friday and Saturday - I'm on H Dock - right across from the Fisherman's Den. Feel free to stop by, say hi and ask for any other info.

Hi Charlie,

I stayed there last year and here's what happened. I saw the video as well and thought "this place looks great" so I arranged to stay there for week (we go to the shore every year). When we got there, the dock boy Brandon was there waiting for us (we had 3 boats with us)which was great, he got us tied up, got us ice and gave us a nice welcome package. The transient docks are on the east end of the marina. About an hour after we arrived the belmar fleet of party boats started coming back from a day of blue fishing, about 8 large party boats abot 100 yards from us.It was pretty noisy as the boats were disembarking which wasn't bad because they all looked like they caught a lot of fish and had a good time. After everybody was gone and the crew's of the boats started to clean, we all started noticing dead bluefish, by the dozens floating around the boats! They were just throwing all the left over fish overboard! It was August and very hot so it didn't take long for the smell to become unbearable. We cleared as many as we could but the were getting under the swim platform and under the dock, it was horrible. Well, they finally cleared out after many hours. Just before midnight, the party boats started filling up agian and when they left, they blew their airhorn to wake the dead! All 8 of them. We toughed it out for one more day before we just had enough, we went to the office, complained and got our money back and left. We went up to the Channel Club and had a great time. If you must go, have them put you in the main part of the marina away from the party boats. Best of luck!

Klein's is good but over priced now that they have their liquor license. If your looking for lower key night life, take a cab into Avon-by-the-Sea (next town north) and go to the Columns on Ocean avenue for the over 40/50 crowd and live music (usually a larger band) or go to The Norwood on Norwood Avenue for the over 30 / 40 / 50 locals crowd and live music (usually a guitar or 3 piece band).

Eat at the Avon Pavilion on the beach and bring your own wine.

Belmar (especially South Belmar) is going to cater to the college / younger crowd.

I'd like to know as well. Might make a weekend trip there in August.

Ok, sorry for the delay but I was busy having the time of my life....

I took off last Friday from Piermont on a smooth, calm sea.
Arrive in about 3 hours or so; maybe a little less.
Went to the gas dock and gassed up and paid for the weekend.
Dock hands were very helpful and quite friendly. Brought me ice, and whatever else I might need.

I stayed on "I" dock, yes close to the party boats but it really wasn't a problem. They do blow their horns as they're departing, and it is a little obnoxious but it's few and far between.

I met up with friends and I must admit, spent a lot of time at DJais but I did spend a good amount of time on the boat watching the sunsets, drinking Scotch, etc....

All in all, I would recommend Belmar Marina.
The bath house facilities are quit nice and locked (they give you FOB to unlock).
There's a diner type eatery on premises as well as a tackle shop.

I took a cab to DJais and the beach from Bob's Taxi (732-768-1604). Bob's quite a character but very professional and prompt. Marina to the Beach by DJais was $5.00.

I took a few trips out on the ocean which was really great. Thanks to the new floating docks for that. I don't know about you guys and gals, but when I have to re-rig the boat on poles every time I come back, I tend to stay put.

I did dock at Klein's a few times just to see what it was all about and get a drink or two. It's somewhat family oriented so getting rowdy didn’t seem like it was going to go over too well. It was quite busy though and seemed to be doing well.

I didn't put my VHF antenna down when going under the bridges.
I thought it would flex.
It didn't.
Luckily I had my hand held.

I ended up taking the train on Monday to work which, btw, is right across the street! How cool is that? Then I took the train back on Tuesday, stayed the night and came back on Wednesday and back to work on Thursday. $12.50 from the marina to Secaucus Junction!

I really enjoyed myself but I always do no matter where I go so YMMV.
All in all, I’ve stayed at quite a few marinas and for me, everything was quite adequate. It totally depends on what you’re into. I liked going into town, ocean trips and hanging at the boat in the evenings which was all there for me.

Your antenna broke? Can't you call for a bridge opening or you thought you could make it? I thought a much taller boat can get in with no problems?

There are bridges and they do open up. They open for the party boats to go in and out as well.

Just the top of it broke. It was just dragging the bottom of the bridge.

Yes, the bridges do go up OR I could have just reached over and put the antenna down.
I said I had fun, I didn't say I was smart.....

Sounds like you had a great time , thanks for the info . And remember no good trip ever goes without some minor dissaster to laugh about later.....
