I took some cousins fishing in the Long Island Sound on Memorial Day and one of them landed this:

stripedbass.jpg

It's a 17 lb weakfish, which is about 2 lbs shy of a world record.

If the rod and reel in the photo were the tackle used, you might be on to a tackle record. Check with your closest sportfishing group.

the rods and reels int he photo weren't used to catch the fish.

bait was cut up bunker on a sea bass rig.

We don't have that kind of fish here, but it looks like a big salt water trout,
but different color scheme on it.

it's also known as a grey sea trout (as well as a few other things). they are supposed to be up and down most of the east coast but apparently, were over fished in the 80's and 90's. they're making a comeback from what i read.

They look a lot like what we call a spotted sea trout(spec) or white trout(sand trout) down here, except that
one is bigger.

Bruce,
Beautiful...congrats.
tight lines and bent rods...

Very nice! Did it make it to the grill or live to be eaten another day?

aj - this one got eaten that night. i wasn't there, but my cousin said it tasted delicious grilled.

BEAUTIFUL FISH!!! Yeah, big weakies have been few and far between for a decade or so. I got an award once for a 14+ lbs weakie I caught on light tackle in the Delaware Bay during a Cape May tourney. That was the biggest I ever caught and it took about 20 minutes to get in the boat. Great eating!
