Leaving Greenport july 8 or 9 heading for
New London to pickup the kids and heading
for Block for few days.
Anchoring and mooring advice needed while in
new harbor.
Than over to Newport maybe ?.

Plenty of room to anchor. Poor holding ground so boats tend to drag as soon as the wind picks up. Moorings go very fast - be there between 8 and 10 to pick up a ball as soon as someone else drops it.

Actually, unless you anchor in the grass, the holding is pretty good - otherwise how could so many boats anchor at one time?

Make sure you have enough scope and enough room to swing.

Hogan, if you had ever been at block in a 40 knot squall you would know what I mean. Having a good bite and enough scope on your own boat is fine, but that doesn't help when all the idiots to windward of you start dragging anchor. It can actually be quite amusing as long as you are not in the line of fire. Most of the anchorage area is >20 feet deep. Most boats do not anchor with enough scope and keeping a 200' radius swing circle around your boat on a crowded day is impossible.

My solution is to anchor as close to the no anchor zone as possible in the Northeast quadrant of the anchoring area. The water is shallower and the worst weather will come from the Northeast, so we are the windward most boat in a storm.

Sea Gull, I HAVE been at anchor at Block under similar conditions. My point is that the holding is not "poor" - to say that is to provide misinformation.

I agree that most don't put out enough scope and that it can get very interesting. However, if you anchor correctly, your boat will not drag.

Scope and Chain. Your best friends at Block. We anchor off of breezy point almost every weekend. Use a Delta anchor, 60' of chain with additional 20' of line to the boat. We are in 6' of water. This makes for a an 8:1 scope. Plus when we drop the hook we back up hard and power set it. Never had a problem. Have seen many boats dragging though. Mostly people that arrive late in the afternoon, drop the hook, jump on the water taxi and head to the bar. Oh well.
