Cops: Man hurt after WaveRunner crashes into boat

July 20, 2014 BY SCOTT EIDLER AND LAURA FIGUEROA
A Huntington Station man was critically injured Sunday after his personal watercraft crashed into a boat along the Great South Bay.

Suffolk County police said Roldando Moreno, 45, was riding a Yamaha WaveRunner in the Lindenhurst cut of the Great South Bay when his watercraft jumped the wake from a boat and crashed into a 23-foot Chapparal boat at about 5:25 p.m.

Moreno was transported to shore by another boater and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was admitted in critical condition, police said.

Jerry Maresca, 50 of West Babylon, said he was on a water scooter when he saw two men in the water, one unconscious, the other one holding the unconscious man, whom he described as being "in bad shape."

Maresca said the men were about 50 to 60 feet away from his watercraft.

The conscious man was screaming for help, Maresca said. Maresca came over on his personal watercraft and urged the conscious man to let go of the unconscious man.

Maresca then grabbed the unconscious man, his feet dangling in the water and his arms leaning against the watercraft, and brought him to another boat where CPR was performed.

No one on the boat was injured, and police did not have details about the boat's owner, a police spokeswoman said.

I came back from Hemlock on Sunday and the jet skis were SWARMING ... I had my wife in the jet boat behind me and told her to back off a few 100 yards.... They were trying to jump my wake with her off my stern.... IDIOTS

One guy actually gave her the finger... of course she tells me back at the dock

So much for certifications, you can't legislate stupid...

Boating accidents are a annual occurrence on the Great South Bay,,,,,,when will people learn. ??

We saw the CG & Suffolk PD boats over at Lindenhurst docks afterwards. Apparently this guy on the jetski jumped a wake of a boat going one way but failed to notice the other boat and slammed into it.

It won't be long before some politician tries to pass yet another law t fix this. And as was said before....you can't legislate stupid.

Hope the guy pulls through, glad no one one the boat was injured.

Yeah, must of been something in the water (no pun intended) this weekend. I had to make several trips back and forth to FI and there didn't seem to be any regard at all. In fact, i almost got hammered in the dogleg going South towards OB yesterday in that wind.

Friday night, I did get boarded by USCG. All good to go of course, just had a lot of "not so good to go" people on board after a heavy party. Had all docs and "things" readily in order and everyone was compliant.

STill looks like the rule book got thrown out for chum because felt like a free for all.

Florida has had its share of accidents where PWC jumped Boat A's wake and crashed into Boat B that was hidden behind Boat A. There are specific rules saying may not: "Jump the wake of another vessel unreasonably or unnecessarily close to that boat or when visibility is obstructed."

Which we teach in Boating Class, to those 5% or so of the boating public who actually attend...

Good example of the adage "Rules are Written in Blood."

It's amazing that there isn't more of these incidents out there.
They need to start licensing boat and PWC operators, but they have to follow up with enforcement and revoke or suspend the licenses for habitual or severe violations much like they do with Driver Licenses or the licensing is senseless. Get caught operating a boat or PWC without a valid license, you should get locked up and the vessel impounded.
The local authorities cut back on Marine Enforcement because of lack of funds. Let them raise the funds to cover the cost through fines. Don't want to pay fines? Then boat responsibly and don't break the rules.
Things have changed drastically over the last 20 or so years. The boats/pwc are getting much bigger and faster creating even bigger hazards in these crowded waters.
I'm lucky to have the flexibility that allows me to enjoy my boat and the water primarily during off peak times or days. If I were working a typical 9-5 Monday-Friday leaving only weekends for boating I wouldn't be a happy camper.

So Rob,
You bought a little boat? did I miss that post???

Ty ,,, I came by and didn't realize the red van was urs.... No car at daves boat so I figured u guys were MIA

ROb

Its a blast literally

I also don't park behind my boat, I park on grass.
Usually if weekend, I am on boat, but this weekend wife didn't want to hang, she wanted to get house crap done and since weather was iffy, i agreed!

Teaching my 14yr old girls to operate boat...it's awesome! They passed the USCG safety course and have a NYS license to operate. WE go on the 17'er all the time and they always drive.

I can teach about giving wide berth to people towing or water skiing or tubing and I can explain why. Same to mooring fields, watch your wake. And you wake can be big at slow plowing speeds, so always look and verify. Either get up on plane or go slow not to plow.

I can teach all this but when it comes to PWCs, all I can say is "be careful and assume they don't know what they are doing. They can turn on a dime"

I'm starting to not like PWCs because of this. They and their drivers are unpredictable.

Chris,
so true... my daughter was at the helm when we anchored in Hemlock and again when I pulled anchor . She did a great job. She always wants seat time ... But that's my job... lol

Keep teaching ...

And its not just PWC that are unpredictable. We were heading east in state channel just before cedar and 4 skiffs buzzed me and cut into the flats... I didn't see it coming ... maybe 3 ' off my bow... NOT COOL

Rob

Had to change my anchor light, so grabbed a work truck to bring a ladder down, sorry I missed you :) Would of loved a ride :)
