Boat Fire in Manorhaven Marina in Pt. Washington

I am there right now on my boat. What a sad story.

Sad Sad Sad

I want to say "clearly a fueling mishap" but nobody can really say "clearly" before an investigation. I wonder if the mayor had had any training in How to fuel and the Whys behind the How.

We had an explosion, fire and sinking just after a boat fueled at one of our most popular marinas. Turned out they had literally "fueled" a Rod Holder.

The boat owner has been identified as Bob Hogan, 74, the former mayor of Plandome Manor, according to Newsday.

I never see people check their bilges after fueling EVER !

OR making everyone get off the floating time bomb.... YEs inconvenient but necessity

Agree with Rob. Never see anyone close up hatches, run blowers or stick their nose inside after fueling.

While it is not the responsibility of the dock hand, they are usually untying the boat as soon as the bill is paid and I have never seen them tell anyone to shut down their genset either.

"...close up hatches, run blowers or stick their nose inside after fueling..." which is exactly what we teach in boating class. That's the sequence, it's easy, effective, and few do it.
Our local marina dockhands will request shutting down of engines and genset. They will NOT run the nozzle. I think it would be good if they at least looked to see if the fuel was going into a tank and not a rod holder.
I start the blower after fueling and sniff its discharge air. That delays starting the engine and therefore delays being cast off by the dock crew. I ask them not to cast us off till I ask them to.
I've started taking a bight back to the boat and cleating off aboard. Then I'm the one determining cast off.

Then there's always the other idiot that runs his blowers while he's fueling!

This gas dock is 100 yards from my marina.

Our Marina manager is one of the "heroes" that the press is looking for that saved life and property. A really great guy that wants no publicity.

"Turned out they had literally "fueled" a Rod Holder."

If that is true, he was either wasted or senile, never the less very sad.
