In my latest marina bill, I got a notice about a study being done by a group from Portland State Univ. They will be doing underwater video surveys of boats moored at marinas in the Bay Area from Sept 19-20, (with permission from boat owners.)

I've used a cheap underwater camera and a laptop a couple of times to look at my props, using fishing line to move it around. It's pretty interesting to see the stuff that grows!

Funny about the timing, I just today called my diver to do a bottom cleaning and zinc check!

I recently got a toy remote control submarine and added a partly-filled water bottle for neutral buoyancy to move the camera around. (Haven't actually used this yet, need to find the right time.)

Anyone know more about this? I plan to call them and see what's up.

I imagine this is focused on SF Bay and not the Delta.........

Flutterby,

From your reply, despite the name "SF Bay and California Delta Boaters", this is a Delta forum? ;)

I sent in my info, will let you guys know what happens in Sept.

As Dave can confirm, we welcome all to this forum. Even if you've moved to New York! Many of the folks on this forum came over from the defunct Delta Chambers forum, but we are not exclusive. And many of our posters are in the Bay area and beyond.

Charles,

This forum is definitely for SF Bay and Delta boaters; there are many of us here that spend time in both locales. I would be very curious to learn what you hear from these folks and I hope you provide us an update. I would love to participate in a study like this but I'm moored in the Delta. Let us know what you find out and don't be such a stranger. We need more Bay posters.

Here is the response I got to my e-mail inquiry about the survey and inspections:

Hello Mr Peterson
Thanks for your email. The data we collect will be used for a report on recreational boating practices and biofouling. Our aim is simply to conduct a pilot study that assesses biofouling patterns and determine if these can be linked to boater traffic or maintenance. It is for academic purposes only and similar studies have been carried out in New Zealand and Australia, and others are ongoing in Vancouver BC and Hawaii. Our budget and scope are quite limited so we have only been in contact with marina operators and some respondants to our questionnaire. We also interact fairly often with CA Sea Grant and others involved in biofouling and marine invasive species. We've sampled commercial vessels in the Bay Area previously.

I'd be happy to email/talk more or meet up in September maybe - you'll have a lot more information on biofouling in the Bay than I and there might be scope for future collaboration if that was of interest to you.

Cheers
ian

Perhaps they are gathering data to use against boat bottom paints????

I think the study is aimed more at understanding the invasive species issue, which is rapidly becoming a "hot-button" topic in California.
