Boat on Lake Erie

We will be coming thru sometime in Sept. We will be heading from Waterford to Brewerton. We are doing the circle from Clayton to Ottawa to Montreal to Chambly to Lake Champlain to the Hudson Then to Oswego and Home. 800 miles more or less. May go down the Hudson a little depending on how the trip is going. We'll pop you pm when we are heading up the canal.

Thanks for the info.

Ahhhhhh........Great....Be looking forward to meeting up with you. I assume you're leaving sometime next month then?
Sounds like about a month long trip. Maybe we'll do that one next year.
Obviously the stops I mentioned were based on you going East on the Canal from Oneida Lake to Waterford so everything will be on the opposite sides.

Planning on leaving the 6th of Aug. We figure 5 to 6 weeks. How is the Waterfront Rest in Brewerton? Been there a few times about 8-10 years ago.
25 years ago played softball for Sackets Rest.

Hehehe....so you're a native of the area eh?
Waterfront....well....if you want an honest answer.......it's mediocre and overpriced.
Sackett's as you probably already know is no longer Sackett's but became Castaway's Landing after Roy Stassi had his misfortune. It was sold to Jerry Paeto who also owns Castaways next door who in turn sold it to his son and is now called something else.
Before the Rt. 11 bridge there was a place called Buoys on the same side as Castaways that has been closed for about the past 5 years or so and has just this month opened again as "Calypso Cay". I haven't had the opportunity to visit yet but I'm sure I will soon.
Castaway's is really a better stop than the Waterfront though with plenty of dock space and only an 8th of a mile further just before the Interstate 81 Bridge.

Yup....Good site and the thing to keep up with on that site is the "Notice to Mariners" keeps you up to date on lock closures for whatever reason etc.
Unfortunately it doesn't really give you alot of useful information though. Just alot of generalities.
There's an actual New York State Canal Cruising Guide available but I wouldn't suggest you go to the expense of buying one because you'd only be using it for the one trip....I've got one that's 5 years old and with the exception of the few marinas that might have closed over the years is a good reference with alot of more pertinent information. It has all the distances between locks and lift bridges....towns...marinas....water depths and bridge clearances. It even has the phone numbers for every lock and lift-bridge on the entire system..
I'd be happy to send you mine if you send it back to me when you're done. Just drop me an E-Mail with your address and I'll send it out the next day.

Left Liverpool in the mid 90's and moved to Clayton. Love the cruising in the 1000 islands. Much less snow than where you are and the sun shines. Don't get those lake effect clouds and snow.

CurrentSea

I have a generic pamplet called Canal Boater Resources with a lot of info, phone nembers, and a list of Marinas. If you like I'll copy and send to you.

Ray, my uncle lives on the river between Clayton and Cape Vincent. He's in the cove just west of Cedar Point State Park, across from Linda island. He and his family (the inlaws) have been there for decades. The in-laws are big into boating, his FIL was Charlie LeChance.

We've spent alot of time in Clayton as kids, it's a great place. My goal is to take the boat up the Hudson, through the Canal, into the St Lawrence and dock at my Uncle's place for a couple of weeks. A dock me and my brothers rebuilt many a times over the years!

Riverfever....
Geez....maybe some time next year we can get up that way. I've been wanting to take a trip up to the St. Lawrence for the past few years and actually started to do it about 3 years ago. We got into Oswego and the waves were coming over the top of the break-wall so it obviously wasn't a good time to venture out into Lake Ontario.
We tried again 5 times over the next 2 days at different times of the day and never got more than a mile or so out and the waves were just rolling up the foredeck and coming over the windshield. I really just am not in for purposely subjecting myself to those kinds of rides anymore so we turned around and went back. Maybe I should plan our next year's trip up that way?

Ray,
Not sure i am making this trip yet, but if I do, I will take you up on your offer.
Thanks!

Ontario can be a little mean at times. You probably experienced one of the famous 3 day blows on the lake. Defintely a great area to cruise up here. Let me know if you plan to come up and we'll hook up.

We just love Clayton. It reminds me of what it was like growing up. The kids for the most part run free in the area. You feel comfortable walking around at any time of the day or night. Tremendous townspeople. Give us a yell if you come up.

FWIW, Just after you get across Lake Oneida going east, you'll find Snug Harbour on the south side of the canal. They had the best fuel prices in the area when we were there and the pumps are automated. Also, when crossing the lake you'll see 2 islands to the south of the channel. DO NOT even think of going between them.

Above all else, stay in the channel.

BTW, there is a nice restaurant on the north side of the eastern entrance of the canal (Sylvan Beach) called "Crazy Clam" (I believe). Neat place and they have a nice seawall to tie up against. Some stay the night right there.
