I am FINALLY getting the new boat to me.....bottom paint completed, new fuel tank, new gelcoat on interior, new turbo installed, cleats put on, etc. Wish I could have done all in paralell instead of serial, but what can you do.

I take delivery in Denton, but rather than go all the way down the Chester, and then around Tilgman, etc. I am going to pay to have the boat trailered to a ramp $3/mile. For my first run to sort everything out I'd rather take an easy trip.

Anyway.....I assume the trailer guy will know, but you know me I'd like to know my options, and be able to discuss intelligently.

Not clear where you are heading, why would you go around Tilman?

Anyhow, there is a public ramp between Rt.50 and Piney Narrows. All the marinas also have ramps but don't know if you could use them.

If you are headed to Chesapeake City you might find a ramp at Worton Creek would give you a trailer run that is not much longer and a shorter water run. Denton is on the Choptank not the Chester.

Phil,

Just this past Saturday, I used the Piney Narrows (Kent Narrows) ramp. The ramps are in good condition, but the center finger pier is a bit short at low tide. The bulkheads on the sides are longer. If you can, best to go at middle tide or higher. The ramp is located on the north side of the Rt. 50 bridge, and on the west side (Kent Island side) of the narrows. They don't sell ramp passes there, but you can buy them at the Boater's World on Rt. 50 on Kent Island. $5 for MD residents. $10 for out of state.

Good luck with the new boat!

Thanks for the help......Sorry Choptank River is correct. I think Piney Narrows is for me. Been up and down that stretch enough I can navigate by buoys. You basically have to head south from Denton on the Choptank and its a long run.....I have towing insurance but just put in a new impeller, new oil, new oil filter, new air filter, two new fuel filters, new oil in transmission and new transmission oil filter......after all the other work....so there are many variables involved.

I have no electronics so I am relying on a hand-held GPS, and 5W portable VHF (with backup batteries), and charts (of course with worst case cell phone and all emergency equipment required).....so I'd like to make it a simple run.

Big Bliss: Maybe I'm thick, but looking at the charts I don't see how if you come out of the Choptank you can avoid going around Tilgman if you're heading north....that's a good 40 mile run compared to heading due west to the Kent Narrows

Lanbuilder: Great suggestion, but at three bucks a mile (twice as much as it costs to run the boat, I'm going to try and minimize)

To avoid going around Tilghman you cut through Knapps Narrows. The channels were dredged early this year and now have at least 6 feet all the way through.

Glenn's info on Piney Narrows is right on target. We used those ramps a lot with our previous boat. Probably the nicest ones around that area.

Just north of the ramps is Piney Narrows Yacht Club ... great prices on fuel and their gas is clean. It gets turned over a lot.

Lanbuilder right again...saw that....Knapps Narrows does cut off a bit...but it still looks like Kent Narrows to Denton via Knapps Narrows is about 40nm which is a good haul.

Phil: You are on the right track with the narrows. That is a long haul down the Chop from Denton. Another suggestion might be something like Tolchester, where they can trailer right up 213 thru centerville, and put in there. Just don't know what would be the cheapest.
Enjoy the new boat, and I hope you have a good/safe ride up home.

Good advice Dusty, yes Tolchester is good and they apparently have a great Cummins shop there. Problem is that its 50miles instead of 25miles.....it really pains me to spend any more money than I have to trailering when the weather is so good for boating and I bought a single screw diesel downeaster just so I could really do some cruising!

Getting it trailered is more than I thought (though buying a trailer and a good heavy duty pickup and fuel isn't free either) I guess I shouldn't complain.....its a BOAT :-)

I know that if I'm in the Narrows I'm fine Rock Hall I'm fine, same for Tolchester, Sassy, Bohemia.....I can get a tow and get things squared away.

The Choptank at Denton......I guess you've got Easton and Cambridge...but I don't know that area too well....then Oxford and through the Knapp Narrows and around to Kent Narrows......certainly doable when I have the time and have run the boat through its paces......but not now during the work week on a dozen newly repaired items (were done from survey and by me)
