Gosh, I hope I don't offend any fellow ROs, but I have to comment on that BOTH article about the Erie Canal cruise...

http://www.boatingonthehudson.com/pdfs/nov07/nov07.pdf

I hope the gentleman who wrote it did so with a lot of tongue in cheek. Because otherwise I don't think I'd want to share the waterway with him...

One passage got my attention very vividly - when he described the reaction of the very small homemade pontoon boat as he drove past - "when he saw me coming, he turned rapidly on a dime and made for the shoreline to avoid being swamped by my wake."

Now I've been up there on that stretch of waterway, and yes there are some VERY small boats up there. But my question to the author is, "did you ever think of SLOWING YOUR DAMN BOAT DOWN so you didn't threaten the guy with being swamped??????"

Guess not. I don't think I'd be so quick to admit that in mixed company. Also the author described a total cluelessness as to what to do in the locks, and what to expect from the places along the way, and then goes on to criticize the food and the accomodations and whatever. He even stiffed the dockmaster at Riverlink park in Amsterdam...

I'd suggest to the fellow to try Long Island Sound next time, and leave upstate New York for the nice people...

Is this the guy that owns the boat Mondo?

Pete, I read the article last weekend and my impression was that the guy was somewhat of a buffoon.

Rommer - Yes...

Mike, that was my impression too, but I was hoping he wasn't a fellow RO [:-o] !!!

We're all capable of doing some pretty stupid things with our boats. My grounding-while-anchored back in October had to be the dumbest thing I've ever done to myself. But this fellow seemed to go from one screwy event to another for the entire trip. I wonder how many more like him are out there...

That guy is not too far away from me in Haverstraw. Only saw him once but his boat has got to be one of the cleanest and best cared for boats I have ever seen. Looked like it was still on the showroom floor.

No Idea how he does it....
