I have an 1989 Carver that I traded for. Merc 350ci engines and Velvet Glide transmissions. The Port side is leaking at the prop shaft flange and the transmission flange.I lose a quart of tanny fluid in 80 miles of cruising. Anybody familiar with this problem? Thanks.

Yep. Leaky rear seal. Needs and a new rear seal installed. I recommend replacing the front seal and have the friction plated inspected while it's out. Been there done that.
Also, have the tranny cooler pressure tested while you are at it. Personally, I would just replace it but that's just me.

While Bob's advice is good, does it even have to come out just to replace the rear seal? In many cases you can just disconnect the shaft coupling and replace the seal.

I always found that if it's a small slow leak, yes, you can do it in place. But he has a pretty big leak so I'm betting the seal seat will need to be resurfaced. Plus, loosing that much fluid overheating and damaging the discs is a real possibility. I've seen them actually fused together from the heat.
