I think canal day starts on Saturday? What should I expect Friday and Friday night in Chesapaeake City?

Do the boats come in on Saturday or Friday night? Will I be able to anchor out in the basin tomorrow afternoon or evening? Or..should I just stay away?

Thanks!

They likely have already started gathering. Get there as early as you can. Watched some heavier than normal traffic heading up the canal tonight.

Yep, they start gathering Thursday. If you aren't there by mid-day today you are probably not going to get into the basin. On the othere hand, the later you get there the better your chances of being at the end of a raft-up so you can get out if you want.

Question: Have you ever been in the basin for Canal Days? Its not a "family" atmosphere. More like "Animal House on the Water". Just not my type of boating weekend but then, many might consider me an old fart.

We actaully went there this year, and I took the boat up on late Wednesday afternoon. Boats were already starting to come in. Mike is right about the folks anchored n the basin. It is "Animal House".... .But, we had a spot on the dock, where it is quite a bit more tame (though still not really a "family" event).
Obviously, it's too late this yeat, but if you want a spot on the dock at this event for next year, you need to enter the lottery at the Chesapeake Inn and Marina in January.

We were in the basin once in the past, and we wouldn't do that again. The ubiquitous "T&A" flashing does not bother us. What bothers us is the "A-hole factor" of overly intoxicated morons who have no respect for others or their boats. You have a good chance of boat damage, or worse, out there in the basin.

If you get a spot on the docks, it can be a fun time. Generally, the people on the docks tend be more serious about their boats, and respectful of others and others' boats. You know they have to go through the effort of going to the lottery in January. They're ususly not just some 21 year old college yahoos who at the last minute decide this would be a cool thing to do for the weekend. They're not getting on the dock without some pre-planning.

Most of the people on the docks get there by Thursday, as we are reuired to pay for a 3-night minimum anyway that weekend. There is a lot of comraderie among the dock crowd, and it can be a really great time. We have a few friends that go, and have made more friends there at the docks. Yes, there is still a bit of "T&A" flashing on the dock (sort of like Mardi Gras), but nobody or their property seems to get hurt. Okay...there might have been a woman or two on the dock who could put your eye out if you get too close, but that's another topic!
The basin, on the other hand, is out of control. Anchor in the raft-ups in the basin at your own risk that weekend.

Canal day seemed less crowded and more tame this year that usual. Its a busy day for me because I help out at the Knights of Columbus booth and have to coordinate parking twenty or so people at my house.

My boat doesn't move and our marina owner does a great job keeping the crazy's out.

The thing I don't understand about the basin is they allow (or don't ban) open fires. I just look and think of the mayhem that would happen if some drunk caught their boat on fire.....could you imagine?

In true Darwin award fashion, I watch the people swimming spitting water out of their mouth and just have to shake my head.

I'm sure that none of the people that have been anchored up for several days would consider emptying their holding tanks. I'm sure that water is pristine....and with all those boats running generators and the mayhem at the docks....

Phil -

I had the same thoughts about the fires and the water quality. It's nuts!
I am usually dry stored, so being in the water from Wednesday to Sunday was the longest stretch of time our boat has sat in the water. It was a pretty nasty looking scum line I had to clean off on Sunday afternoon after it was back on the trailer.

You should have looked me up and seen the new kitchen!

One look at that water....I'd rather put my hand in a public toilet that hadn't been flushed than swim in there.

And there was some guy out in the middle that was putting off more smoke than all the food vendors on shore combined. I just can't imagine the chaos a boat fire in that atmosphere would cause.

<<...."You should have looked me up and seen the new kitchen!"...>>

I did think about it, but figured you would have your hands full just trying to keep the crazy people at bay that weekend. We get up there a few times a year, and likely will again before the end of summer. Was it last year we saw you there or two years ago?
The Chesapeake Inn makes a convenient lunch stop for some waterside eating. Will pm you next time we're heading up there. If you want, you can pm me your cell number, and I'll put it in my phone.

Here are a few videos of the event...... at least ones we are allowed to post under the forum rules.
A couple videos are from the Friday / Friday evening before Canal Day. Sorry that the quality is not the best. This was done with one of those little "Flip" pocket video cameras, and it was my first time using it.
