I have finally started doing my own maintenance on 1998 Carver Mariner 350 (mostly out of frustration with the shops service). I just changed the raw water impellers and now am ready to change the plugs. I have the 7.4 MPI's (454 XLi mp).

My question is: Is there anything or any tips I should know such as Will the job require any special sockets like a swivel to get to any of the plugs. I have a standard 5/8" socket in both 1/2 and 3/8 drives with extensions. Snap on Tools has a lot of different type sockets and it got me thinking I may need more than just a standard. I already changed the plugs on the gen set but that was easy.

On my '93 Silverton 37C with 454 XLs, I need an exact length extension to remove/install outboard plugs on port engine. Too long & I can't get ratchet on because of proximity of water tank. I also use a torque wrench when installing plugs.

Get a quality socket that has a clip or foam/rubber insert to hold the plug in the socket when you lift it out and put it back in. Nothing worse than plugs dropping in the bilge.
