Close cooling fresh water impeller ran without wat

Just launched my boat. Replaced my fresh water impellers last summer. Started my boat in the water but still in the slings. No water out the exhaust. Stopped the engines. The sling was covering the intake. Had the travel lift operator lower the rear sling. Then water came out the exhaust right away.I may have ran the engine for a minute without water. Will there be damage?
 
The damage would be to the impeller. A minute is a long time without water however I have found the antifreeze used to winterize make for a great lubricant! I would pull the impeller or at least remove the cover and take a good look at it.
 
You really have to give us more info about the engine/drive. There are different types of pumps with different types of impellers.
 
Thanks for the response. I have 350 crusaders close cooling. I change the freshwater impellers about every 5 years. Real pain. I have to take out the pumps to get at the impellers. I don't want to go through that now after doing it last summer. After the sling straps were lowered plenty of water came out. I never have had a problem like this at launch. But the straps had to be put in a slightly different location this year. Long story. As long as my temps stay ok. and the water flow stays good I don't plan on pulling out those pumps. I am just curious to know if there may be some compromise to my impellers and to see if anyone has any experience as to how long you can run without water. I know I/Os and outboards fry the impellers pretty quickly.
 
When you say fresh water impellers, do you mean the coolant side of the system? If so, I would not worry about it. The "fresh" water side has fluid in it. Every Crusader Raw Water side I've seen is a snap to change.
 
It's a gamble you have to be willing to take. Nobody can tell you how much damage you did to your impeller. If it's pumping water and temps are good at low idle, you might be alright.

If you have "just enough room" the Sea-Dog #660040 impeller puller or Jabsco # 500700040 puller can make that job so much easier if you don't already have one.

But IMO, 5 years is an overly long interval schedule for that important pre-emptive task.
