Boater Advisory: Delta Waterways Will Reopen as Scheduled

April 19, 2006

SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Boating and Waterways (DBW) has announced that the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta will be open to recreational boating at noon Thursday, April 20 when the closure order expires.

“We have determined that conditions in the Delta, particularly in San Joaquin County, are improving enough that it is no longer necessary to keep large areas of the waterways closed," said David Johnson, deputy director of DBW. “However, that doesn't exactly mean a return to business as usual because the Delta waterways are still quite full, running swiftly, and carrying some significant debris. We would ask that boaters use good judgment in high-water areas, heed any local restrictions such as area waterway closures and speed restricted areas, and remember that boat operators are responsible for the effects of their wakes at all times."

The Department of Boating and Waterways, the state's boating agency, is authorized to restrict or ban recreational boating in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta during periods of high water levels to protect people and property, facilitate flood fighting, and control vessel wakes that may lead to overtopping of levees.
