In the search of our new to us boat and planning on being offshore quite a bit, has anyone ever plumbed a porta pott so it can be disposed on shore as well as an overboard discharge (where legal of course)?
I suspect there would be a way to utilize the holding tank with a quick disconnect to a macerator pump. Having never owned one, I really don't know.
Thanks for any help!

What size boat and will it be trailerable? I ask for a legit reason.

Thanks! It would be for like a 23' or so center console (mounted in the console). I was reading the EPA site and porta pots are not considered an installed head. BUT, if it were plumbed in, I'm guessing it would be considered otherwise. Gulf of Mexico, 9 miles off for discharge. Yes, trailerable but kept on a lift.
Thanks!

It can be done. The easiest way is to go over the side just above the water line. Pascal can explain it better than me. He has seen it more than I have. --EDIT ADD-- Over the water line, not necessarily w/ a porta potty. --/EDIT ADD-- The reason I asked if it was trailerable is because I read a post (here or elsewhere) where the owner built his own pump out station with a macerator and tapped into / pumped out into the clean out the clean out port of his home sewage.

The easiest way is to "Go over the side". Why not dump the porta-pottie tank over the side while offshore, if that is an issue. The built in holding tank has about a 5-6 gallon capacity so if you are on a day trip, that should be plenty of capacity until you get back to the dock. Leave anybody on shore if they are suffering from intestinal distress.

Good info Kida. Sounds like a neat setup.
L, this isn't for the dudes, but for the gals on the boat. They would probably freak out if I launched the pott contents overboard. I probably would too. The intestinal distress gang is not invited regardless what is on board.
Thx!!

Hopefully Vic will check in. In the meantime, check Thetford and Dometic. They have Porta Potties with MSD for dockside pumpout. I know Cobalt had them in some of their larger bow riders. There is no reason you couldn't adapt one to go over the side as opposed to up and over the gunwale. RV'ers have some stuff to do just what you want that may be of assistance. With no below the water line holes and no ER venting to be concerned with I would think the parts don't need to be marine certified.

Thanks Kid! I think Vic retired and is MIA now. Maybe he will check in from time to time. I actually met him in NJ a few years ago.
I'll look into the manufacturers you suggested. Many, many thanks!

Froggy,

I just received a marine supply catalog in the mail yesterday. It appears the SeaLand 711 or one of the SeaLand 960 series may suit your needs nicely.

That would have been me.

Plumbing isn't that hard. The basic rules are "Hot on the left, Cold on the right, and Poop won't flow uphill."

So, if you have a tank that you can attach a hose to, all you need to add is a macerator pump, a switch, and a thru hull (above the waterline).

A below the waterline discharge requires a seacock and a vacuum breaker or anti siphon loop.

Froggy, I have 2 of the older versions of the Sealand Travelers (711) in our boat and both were plumbed with deck pumpout and macerator pumps. I think the Sealand's would work really well in a CC if you have the room. With the toilets mounted on the holding the overall height is very nice and would result in a lot less of a squat down there in that console :) My heads are fresh water feed so I'm not sure how you would do that in a CC with no water holding tank.

Good luck
Niles

Awesome info and pics. Many thanks!!!! When the time comes I'll look into the sealands.

The SeaLand Marine Traveler toilets would be the ticket, if you have enough room in the head to mount them - they have a fairly large footprint.
