I tried to get an answer from Vic, but since he no longer works for Raritan, I guess he's not around much any more. I saw Barren River offered some advice and I am hoping he can advise me-I didn't want to steal the other thread. I have a Crown head in my '89 Santego. It seems when he do any extensive cruising or we get into any semi-rough seas, we get a horrible smell in the salon. I use the Raritan deodorizer product in the resevoir. There is never any water in the bottom of the head-it seems to drain directly to the holding tank. My thought is that fumes from the holding tank come up thru the head. Should there be some kind of "trap" to hold some water in the bottom of the head to prevent holding tank fumes from coming through? The current head discharge hose seems to be a downhill run to the holding tank.

This has been addressed in older threads....and it sounds as if the odor is coming back up thru the head. How long since you changed the joker valve? Raritan part number C253 The joker valve won't seal off the smell all together but if yours hasn't been changed in a while and not sealing, it's time to change it. If you want water to stand in the bowl you need to install a vented loop, which would keep any odors from coming out the head

If you have a 24 year old boat, it's almost certain the sanitation hoses are permeated with sewage and need to be replaced.

Boat heads don't normally have a trap in the discharge line like homes and businesses do.

You could also have a partially blocked vent or vent line or if there's a filter in the vent line, it could be blocked.

And of course, you could have a leak in a hose or even the holding tank itself. There's no one single answer.
