I'm sure many have noticed the cruise ships going up and down the Hudson the past couple of weekends. Last weekend I was headed south from Bear Mountain and was passed by two identical small cruise ships. I believe one was responsible for over-turning a small skiff at Con Hook with a dad and his two kids a couple weeks ago. Luckily, they were not hurt.

Well, I saw them again yesterday so thought I would search for them. I think I found it, a fall foliage cruise: http://www.americancruiselines.com/destination.php?crn=18

How did they get overturned. Do those ships throw that big a wake???

They sure do.. I even had to back off a few weekends ago. They manage to slow down while approaching Verplank.

We were in Oswego this year and saw the Grand Mariner come in off Lake Ontario - they totally strip the top deck of all masts, antennaes, radars, etc and then they lower the whole bridge so it is flush with the top deck. With all that done, it is ready to transit the canal out to the Hudson. It was amazing watching them knock that huge vessel down to a 21' clearance.

It must be a pretty seaworthy ship as well, since it rode out a huge thunderstorm that passed over, wind gusts were close to 60mph.
