Just to have an alternative to the other active thread....
A year ago, my slip neighbor was thinking of giving up his seasonal mooring in Oyster Bay because he didn't use it enough to justify the cost. Last year he asked us if we wanted to partner on it and we went for it. It was a great season and we enjoyed it immensely. We were looking forward to another great season.
Unfortunately, there are many boaters who feel that they can pick up someone else's mooring whenever they want to. Last year, this resulted in two beached boats and a broken mooring and I'm sure many complaints. Many times, my friend or I would have to ask someone to move off our mooring when we arrived there.
This year, we have been told that the town will be issuing registration stickers for the boat and the mooring. If you don't have a sticker that matches the mooring, you get a summons. At first, we were told it was no problem for us if I had copies of all the paperwork. Now we are told that the boat that is registered to the mooring must be present. The lessee is not allowed to loan the mooring out, regardless of whether permission is given.
So since we can no longer share the mooring and my friend does not want to keep it for himself, we had to let it go.
Of course, we can and will go there and hang on the hook for free but the mooring let me sleep well at night knowing that we were secure regardless of wind direction. It is a shame that the actions of a few can spoil a good thing for others.
