This happened about a month ago. Has anyone been caught yet? Pretty gutsy of them to pull it off. Even in the dead of night you would think someone would have seen or known something. And where would you hide five 40 ft docks?

BETHEL ISLAND - Five docks have disappeared from an abandoned Bethel Island construction site.

The floating docks were part of the now-stalled Delta Coves project, an upscale development of 495 single-family lots with man-made lagoons. Although construction stopped with the downturn in the housing market, nearly all of the undeveloped parcels already had docks installed.

The structures measure approximately 40x4, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

A deputy has contacted the owner, who has not filed a formal police report.

Nonetheless, deputies are looking for them and would like to speak to anyone with information on their whereabouts. Call 925-427-8507.

I hadn't heard about this!!! But in the middle of the night when it is very cold and/or rainy, not many people are out on the levees or docks. Electric motors are very quiet; paddles are even more so. It isn't that far from the opening to the Coves to get to waters hidden by berms and then off to even more remote ares. About the only way to find them is from the air unless they are scattered one from another. And no one can see "into" the project except for one small part of a road leading to Stone Rd.

I thought the owners were required to have around the clock security there, but it sounds like that isn't happening anymore either.

I think the clue to solve this incident is the fact that the owner is not making a police report. Now why would he do that?

I'm glad the cops didn't kill him. Which was his wish! Poor guy needs to have his meds better supervised or perhaps he needs to be institutionalized. He definitely doesn't belong in jail and I'm sure the judge recognize that.

That is probably the most excitement in that area since New Years Eve! LOL

It's a pretty sad case. Even the latest generation of anti-psychotic drugs have pretty bad side effects. That's why it's hard to keep these people on medication. A lot of them just end up on the streets.

True and they end up "self medicating" with illegal drugs such as meth.

I was thinking the same thing. It's not like he would have a hard time finding any in the Delta either.

Yeah, since he survived, the county can now pick up the tab for his recovery and treatment costs for years to come!

Not to mention the inevitable lawsuit for his "injuries"... [:-headache]

If it was any of us here that took a shot to the chest from a sniper rifle, we'd be six feet under!

It must be true that God takes care of drunks and crazy people... [:-spin]

bayareaboater: "Methel Island" is out of date. Of course there are still drugs on the island, but not nearly as bad as it was back in the 1980s and 1990. Increased property values brought more sheriff patrols to the island. And getting rid of all the derelict boats which had liveaboards has helped too. I think Mayberry Slu may be the new meth center.

Also, I fear you are lumping the mentally disabled with the illegal drug users. They may not be one and the same. If this man would stay on his medications as prescribed, he would probably be quite functional on a daily basis. True, there are many street people who should be on prescribed medications and are not, but that is the other side of the coin.

[end of rant]

You keep thinking that. The world could use more folks like you. [:-thumbu]

I on the other hand, being in L.E. for almost 30 years now and a former property owner on Methel Island look at the island with different glasses and can attest to the FACT that despite the efforts of CoCo County, there are still plenty of illegal drugs and other illegal activities going on on the island. Please don't be blinded by the number of yards and marinas that have been cleaned up thanks to code enforcement.

In fact, pull up the Megan's Law website and punch in the zip code for Methel Island and see how many 290 registrants are living on the island. It might surprise you...

Sure, those same illegal activities and other sexual predators are pretty much everywhere, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Methel Island earned and deserved their reputation and will have to live with it for many years to come.

And from what I have seen so far, the Boathouse (AKA Jugs) has changed in name alone. Same stuff, different name...

As far as the 5150 that took a shot to the chest goes, well, he had the opportunity to better himself. He CHOSE not to.

I believe in personal responsibility big time.

Too bad way too many others don't... [:-banghead]

And now with the Delta Coves project on hold, LE resources are probably being used elsewhere. My guess is that the reason Methyl Island was cleaned up in the first place was to attract investments such as Delta Coves which would boost the local economy and generate much needed tax dollars which in turn would go towards beefing up law enforcement and encourage further investment. Because no family will want to move into an area that is a haven for meth heads, pedophiles, and other assorted dirt bags.

The days of Earl Stanley Gardner on Bethel Island are long gone. Sadly, it will never be the nice little backwater community it once was. It either has to encourage investment through developments such as Delta Coves which will mean more LE employed to clean the place up and keep it that way or remain Methyl Island.

I've been "playing" on Bethel Island for over 30 yrs and have a boat on Piper Slu for 25 yrs. I disagree with the opinions above. Sure there are drugs on the island. And anyone who wants such can find them. But that is just as true any where. BI is not better and no worse.
