Last night, we went to the boat to get it ready for a party. Everything was normal. I cleaned the lower head, flushed, turned the pump on and then noticed a foul odor. A strong holding tank odor. I checked the bilges and saw no sign of a leak. The odor continued, much to our displeasure, throughout the evening party. The toilets worked fine. The smell was strongest in the storage area where the holding tank resides.
Didn't spent the night on the boat due to smell.
Went back this morning to find no more odor! What is going on?
5/8 inch vent hose...with a cartridge. I assume its a filter. Can't find any numbers on it.
Why odor last night and none today?

Thanks Bill
I saw that thread when I did a search on the topic. It didn't seem to fit quite right.
I should have been a little more specific.
The smell is noticed in the cabin more than either of the bathrooms. It doesn't seem like a toilet problem. They don't smell. The odor was most strong in the storage area, where the tank is loocated.
What I am most puzzled by is that the smell was almost completly gone this morning. If it were a filter or vent problem, what would remedy it overnight?
The heads got plenty of use last night with 15 people on the boat. We cruised for three hours with windows wide open and the smell seemed worse at the end of the evening. Then gone this morning. I am puzzled.

I'd suspect a clogged vent, and a bad vent line or a leak in the top of the tank (maybe just a loose clamp). When you put something in, something (smelly gas) has to be displaced. Overnight with no use, the odor would eventually dissipate.

If it has a cartridge in the line, it's likely a vent line filter that needs to be changed. Does it look like this?

If so, Boatfix has 'em at a discount price, scroll down to Holding Tank Vent Filter at this link:

I personally hate those filters as they're expensive and are generally a PITA. They usually need to be replaced every year. Plus, if they should get wet inside due to overfilling the tank, or from the boat heeling, they're toast. I know Pascal doesn't completely agree with me on this topic, but then no two people always agree.

With a 5/8" vent line, you won't get nearly enough air into the tank to keep the smell down, so the only alternative is a strong odor-masking additive to the tank or a vent line filter. The bacteria-type additives that I recommend won't work in the tank unless there's a lot of air coming into it from the outside. A 5/8" vent line doesn't allow that.

As to why the smell came, then left, I haven't a clue - perhaps the filter unclogged itself... Really can't say.
