Is there anywhere to dock for a length of time at Crandon Park marina on Key Biscayne? Our Flotilla is doing VSC's there this Saturday and I was thinking we would take the boat over and then head for No Name after. We will be there for 3-4 hours.

Thanks,
Linda R.

This looks like a good thread to post this in...

The wife and I are thinking about trailering our 30-foot powercat to S. Florida and spending a couple of weeks cruising the keys in May 2007. I'll be more than happy to have any input from those in the area that would like to comment. At the moment I'm quite interested in where would be a good place for us to launch the boat and leave our truck and trailer for the period. I called Crandon Park. They'll charge a $214 fee to store the trailer for the 2 weeks. They said we could park the truck near the office, but at our own risk (how's that area crime-wise?). I also called Rock Harbor Marina in Key Largo. They seemed like a decent option (once their construction is complete, a close call date-wise), but would offer trailer and truck storage for even less money. Which might be a good or bad thing. Any suggestions/comments?

hi linda,

didn't see your post before... they should hve some transient spaces, i think there are docks by the fuel docks and the ramps.. also where sundays' used to be, they tore down the restaurant but the docks in front shoudl still be there, you might be able to tie up there. if you're coming to help out with VSCs i'm sure the staff can help you out... DKM is too far obviously but could go to NNH and ride a bike over to crandon :-)

mixman, leaving a truck at Crandon should be ok... there are always cars parked over night there... down in the keys, Plantation yacht harbor has a ramp but i dont' think they allow overnight trailer parking, check though, if you stay a few nights at the marina they might be able to help. there are a number of facilities in Key Largo, onthe bay side, who might allow parking.

search some of the Fl Keys websites for marina info and call them up...

Thanks for the input. We found a storage place with a ramp in Marathon that might work. We can dock at Marathon Yacht Club (they've got reciprocal policies with our club in MD).

Now my next need for knowledge...anybody want to comment on sites to see and where we should spend the precious hours of our 2 weeks?

lots of things.. what are you looking for ? do you like anchoring out or prefer a marina or even a hotel for the night ?

get a Keys cruising guide, worth the money.

spots to consider... Bahia Honda State park and beach, Key West obviously, a run up to Cape Sable (not far from marathon), anchoring out on teh bay side... there are many nice spots on the bay side of the lower keys which i havenbt' had a chance to explore yet...

a GREAT site for info on the keys is www.bootkeyharbor.com teh graphics and navigation are very basic, but great contents on spots to see, incl diagrams and areial pix.

Thanks Pascal. We're anchor-out types with stops at marinas every few days to stretch the legs, grab a good meal, and top off the tanks. I'll check out that link. Cruising guide just arrived from Amazon yesterday.

there is a nice anchorage in Newfound harbor, just west of bahia honda, also behind some of the small keys just north of BH. north of tavernier/pigeon key, the bay is pretty deep and you can go north and also find some nice post to spend the nice, away from everything...

That sounds inviting. We only draw 18", so we don't have to worry too much about depth.
