"Coke and Mokelumne River Have Interesting Connection

The Mokelumne River and Coke have an interesting connection. According to The Record, Coke recently paid $200,000 toward U.S. Forest Service restoration of meadows in the Indian Valley area, southwest of the CarsonPass, in the Mokelumne watershed. The restored meadows will soak up more snowmelt and release it slowly during the summer, rather than all at once during the spring. Water from the MokelumneRiver winds it way into the water system tapped to produce Coke at its San Leandro plant. The restoration project is expected to help Coke offset about 90 percent of the water used in its San Leandro plant, replenishing about 80 million gallons of groundwater a year, or 300 million liters of the soft drink. The Foothill Conservancy, which advocates for the Mokelumne River, expressed pleasure that the money came through from Coke, as well as the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation."
