We're going to be driving (auto) from West Palm towards the Keys, looking for a quiet, out of the way place to stay on the water for a night or two. Not looking for anything fancy but more off the beaten path. Any suggestions out there??

Key West and ask the locals

I've always liked the 'Turtle Hospital" in Marathon. Can't remember the name right now but it's on the right going South. Richie is a great guy, small cottages, on the water. Nothing fancy but neat. If you really need the name I can find it for you. If you have a rental boat I think you can keep it there.
Have a great time!

Froggy.....if you can get the name we could check it out!

You indicated quiet. I would consider Marina Del Mar in Key Largo. They have nice pools, and lack the "action" down in key west.

I personally prefer Key West, but we stay periodically at Marina Del Mar for casual relaxation. There is great diving around there if you are interested. The property has three pools and a couple of restaurants. It is right off of A1A.

Yes, quiet is what we like. Not big party people. If you're familiar with Jekyll Island in Ga., that's the type of atmosphere we're looking for.

Hidden Harbor is the name. Haven't been there in a few years. May want to look it up on Google Earth.

The motel at the turtle hospital is closed. Hurricane Wilma wrecked everything and he only had enough insurance to fix the motel or the hospital. Richie chose the hospital. We stayed there 12 years ago and found the hospital very good. The hospital gives tours. They should be on their web site "turtle Hospital . org".

Holy Sh#t! I'm really sorry to hear that. It has been a while since we've been there. Really sad.....

Barbara -

There are some quiet areas of Key West. You might like the Abaco Inn. It's at 415 Julia Street, a quiet residential street in "Bahama Village", off the main drag. Though it's quiet at the Abaco Inn, it is still within walking distance of stores, shops, and activities of Duval Street.
