The owner of a Boston Whaler fishing boat was fueling his vessel at the Safeway fuel pumps near Disco Bay last weekend and instead of putting the fuel nozzle into the fuel fill (after removing the fuel fill cap), he put the nozzle into a flush mounted rod holder and proceeded to "fill" the boat (actually, the deck and bilge) with about twenty two gallons of gasoline. Either the bilge pump or the scuppers (or both) dumped the gasoline out onto the ground and into the closest storm drain. The fire dept as well as a Hazmat team and the Fish & Game (now called Fish & Wildlife) all responded to the scene and attempted to keep the fuel from flowing into the Delta.

I'd hate to see the bill for that clean-up! And F&G can get real serious with their fines when it comes to that kind of thing...

Plus, this knucklehead is lucky he didn't kill everyone within a quarter mile radius of the incident! Yikes! [xx(] [:-skull]

Heh! Heh! Heh! I had a friend do just that...and he's been boating 40+ years.

A couple years ago I pulled into the Santa Cruz yacht harbor fuel dock and told the gas boy to fill it up. The young man said "gas or diesel". I said gas. As he handed me the nozzle, he once again said "you do want the gas". I said yes for the second time. When I questioned him about his persistence he told me that earlier in the week he had pumped 120 gallons of gas into a commercial boat that had Diesel engines as the boat owner was up in the bait shop . No one was happy over that one

Ouch!!!

Some years ago, a boat washer that also claimed to be a boat mechanic, was changing the fuel filters as well as doing some other work on a 38' Bayliner with twin diesels that was berthed at the Disco Bay marina. Somehow, he ended up with a major fuel leak and discovered it after about five gallons had leaked into the bilge and was subsequently pumped out by the auto-bilge pumps.

The end result was a fine of $10,000 by the Fish and Game as well as the costs of the clean-up of the docks, rip-rap (shoreline) and the other boats in the adjacent slips.

It's amazing how much damage can be done by just five gallons...
