Expired Flairs

I should know, but I don't. Where can I dispose of these. Some are from the mid 80s.

I just called my FD and they won't take them.

Check with your local United States Power and Sail Squadron or Coast Guard Aux. They run training classes on how to use flares and use expired flares in their demonstrations.
 
Contact the Manufacturer, They may tell you how, or they may even take them back?..
 
So funny I asked West Marine this the other day and they too said no one will take them.
 
I've never had any luck finding any place to take them either. During my post-Sandy cleanup I found a bunch that were 20+ years old in the house. I broke them open and soaked them in a bucket of water for a few days. They weren't burning after that, so I just threw them in the garbage.
 
Call your town hall. They have programs for dealing with HazMat (hazardess materials). Sorry, do not throw them in the garbage, even after you soak them for a few days. You'd be adding hazardess waste to the ground water. In addition, once they dry, they are again flammable. I don't suggest lighting them in the backyard either. They're designed to light over open water, not fields or lawns. Sparks fly; fires ensue. Dispose properly, please. I keep four expired flares on board in additon to fresh ones. You never know when you'll need some extras. I have to admit, that boxfull would be too much to have on board! I guess we're lucky in that our local fire department takes them for use in training exercises. Hy
 
Thanks Ed, I went to West Marine in Patchogue, they would not take them. I called West in West Islip and they said they take them. I showed up with the milk crate and while they were having second thoughts, I beat it out of the store. Trying to get rid of these flairs was a pita, and no one on a site like ours knows where to go, makes me wonder where others go. I guarantee flairs get thrown out all the time.

So how come there is not a Federal drop off place for these flairs.

We use the outdated flares to start up bonfires. They work great for that as they get the small kindling started in no time.
