(04-08) 16:48 PDT DISCOVERY BAY -- A fishing outing in the Sacramento River Delta ended in tragedy this morning when an SUV carrying six people plunged into a slough near Discovery Bay, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver, a 25-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 4-year-old girl was pronounced dead at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital, while a 5-year-old boy was declared dead at San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp near Stockton.
The SUV's other three occupants, including another 4-year-old girl, were not seriously hurt, CHP Officer Scott Yox said. The victims' names have not been released.
The vehicle was traveling on a narrow, gravel-surfaced levee road near the Contra Costa-San Joaquin County line when it plunged off the roadway about 11 a.m.
"It seems the vehicle may have been traveling a bit too fast and went down the right side of the road into the water," Yox said.
A group of family and friends had spent Saturday night at a home about three miles away after attending a party celebrating a child's first communion, Yox said.
The people in the car that crashed had left the home to go fishing near Old River Bridge, a landmark near Highway 4 and Discovery Bay Boulevard, Yox said.
By the time the CHP received the first report of a vehicle in the water at 11:50 a.m., the vehicle was fully submerged.
The East Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded with engines and a boat, and the Stockton Fire Department dive team helped out.
