Last Saturday the generator building at Champlins burned in a really dramatic looking fire. No one was hurt to my knowledge, but the building and generators (the marinas main source of power) suffered damage. To the credit of the Block Island Fire and Rescue, I was amazed that much of the building was saved and that the adjacent laundry facility did not burn.
There were some really strong wind gusts that day. The smoke could be seen from Paynes and Boat Basin, drifting out over the very full marina.
Within hours, two huge temporary generators had been trucked in from the mainland, and power was restored to the marina the next day I believe.
