Fire Island Inlet

Sal Alfano, a member of FOWH, sent us navigation information regarding the Fire Island Inlet. Sal's email message and chart image follow. Our thanks to Sal for sharing this information.
I'm forwarding this to you as a piece of the FI Inlet entry/exit puzzle which may be helpful to FOWH members. Note the "Red Line" is the preferred way. Note also the turn to port off #6 is a considerable way past the marker.
As always things can and do change rapidly in the inlet so this should be considered only as a guide. Members must be careful and "read" the signs as they proceed.

I never got used to that inlet, and it looks like it will be a while before I give it a shot. Luckily I'm just about in the middle time wise between FI and Jones Inlets and Jones is still pretty straightforward.

Does the ferry go thru there? My son was there earlier this week I said it's a tough inlet to navigate and he said the ferry goes through there how bad can it be? I can't remember I haven;'t been there in over 20 years.

Dave,

No ferry's go through F.I. Inlet. All F.I. ferry's are in the bay. The only commercial traffic in and out of the inlet are the party fishing boats. The inlet is a mess right now. Hopefully they get it right sooner than later before someone dies there.

Thanks to Al for the pic. Coming in you need to go way west as you come north to avoid the shoal area and head east along the beach. There is plenty of water and it was marked correctly 5/5/13 when I came in. If it is rough and you miss the 4a buoy (which was further north/west), you are in a world of trouble.

[Brite Idea]

My buddy Captains a boat out of Captree and said he runs out all the time with no problem. I asked him how deep is it and he said he always has a couple of feet under the boat. I haven't been out there yet this year but looking at the picture that is the same line I was running last year. Fire Island Inlet is always changing and I agree Jones is better.

I went through the inlet today at high tide and pretty much did what the picture shows but I stayed west of buoy 3 also. I never saw less than 13' of water.
