Fittings and hoses

I removed my holding tank to locate the source of an odor. Turns out it was coming from possibly two places... one from vent fitting on the tank that, even though sealed with white glue or caulk, would allow air/odor to escape around it. The 2nd place was in a forward bilge that I only have access to with the tank out (although I intend to create a small access hole for future inspection/cleaning).

Anyway, to remove the tank, I cut the 1 year old oder shield lines right near the elbows on the tank as they were not coming off no matter what I tried. So my lines are going to come up a couple of inches short when the tank is placed back in. I have excess odor shield hose from when I change them out last year... but I cannot find a fitting to connect two 1.5" hoses together to lengthen them. I don't like the idea of having additional points of failure, but running the new hose last year was something considerably less than fun. I would prefer not to ever do that again. What's the best way join to 1.5" odor sheild hoses together? I've googled it but I don't find any hose to hose connectors.. just hose to tank.

Thanks,

West Marine has those connections in plastic by Seafit "Barbed Hose Coupler 1-1/2" SF part #357010"

Go to HD or Lowes and get 1.5" double ended hose barbs. They are less than a buck each.

Thanks to both Capt Bill and Hogan. I can do either of course... but I was concerned that being a waste line it needed to be a "special" connector and in WM, they list no such couplers of that type in the sanitation section... just in the regular plumbing section. So it sounds like either option is OK. Thanks.

Like me, think about adding another vent line. When I put my tank in, I knew that the vent run was longer than I wanted and put a 1 inch line in. It's stays ventilated sufficiently when I am on the boat, but will go sour if it is sitting for a week. Cross ventilation from a second vent hose, would go a long way to keeping the tank sweet.

A tank that stays sweet is a whole lot less sensitive to any ventilation leaks if it does not stink to begin with.

There are lots of places to go, West Marine is not one of them, unless you have more money than sense. If you have good hose already, sand the barbs down so there are no sharp edges and use a hair dryer or heat gun to soften the hose.

I would suggest you pick up a 1 1/2" pvc union & two male pipe thread > hose barb. Then, in the future you could always take the fitting apart for any further service.

P.S. You can search Home Depot plumbing for a union & see what I am talking about.

West Marine isn't a bad place to go if you have the sense to get a Port Supply account or use someone else's. :-)

But seriously, the reason for his need of hose to hose nipples is the fact that he had to cut his existing hoses and they are now to short to reach the existing nipples. So heating the hose ends and/or sanding down the existing nipples is not the answer to the whole problem.

As to cost, the WM retail for a 1 1/2" hose to hose nipple is only $3.89. Hardly a boat budget breaker in my book.

With gas at around $4.00 a gallon, I guess it boils down to which is closer. A WM or a HD as to where you can by it cheaper. :-)

You do not need a "marine" or a "sanitation" 1 1/2" hose to hose nipple, and 1 1/2" hose nipple will do, as long as it is not metal! That sanitation sh!t is corrosive!

+1 on sanding the sharp barbs off the regular connectors. they will bite too hardinto the hose and will affect the odor resistance over time.

+2 on sanding down the barbs. If you do not, then you will probably never get the hose onto them. The ones that I have seen that are made for marine sanitation hose are smooth - no barbs.

lobsta1's suggestion on the union is definitely worth considering.
