I was reading about Fleet Week going on in NYC this next week. Has anyone ever taken their boat down when they are pulling out? If so, could you be somewhat close to them? I thought that would be an awesome sight for my kids to see as they leave next Wednesday.

We were in the Chesapeake 2 years ago on a fishing boat and a carrier came by. A chopper had us back out of the channel till they passed, but we were still pretty close. WOW what a sight to see up close.

They will be leaving at different times. Yesterday would have been the day to watch. The harbor was closed to all but passenger ferry traffic yesterday during the parade of ships. You must also maintain a 500 yard security zone around all military vessels at all times. The ships will be escorted by USCG, Navay and other law enforcement smaller boats. Don't come within 500 yards. Best to keep even more of a distance.

Yesterday would have beeen a great day to see them coming in, but I didn't realize it was this week. If they actually closed the harbor, then maybe it would be a nice view from liberty state park.

You would have been able to hang out on your boat in the opening of the Morric Canal (Colgate Clock) that was an excellen vantage point.

Check out http://www.cnrma.navy.mil/fleetweek/index.htm for all the info. You can take tours of some of the ships (Your kids may like that) plus there are lots of events all week.
