We are spending a week in early August on Fort Myers Beach. Renting a house with a dock on the bay side, and a pontoon boat for a few days. Any things that I should know or be wary of using the pontoon on the bay and near shore on the Gulf side? We have plenty of PFD's for adults and kids. Thanks.

Mantanzas is just so so (the bay side). Really no exploring. There are quite a few commercial boats back there. You will most likely spend most of your time on the Gulf side. I don't think you will be able to beach the Pontoon, but you can anchor off shore close enough to walk in. If you get a chance, get up Pine Island Sound and Matlacha. Just go under the Sanibel Bridge and head north around Pine Island. My favorite place is North Captiva. Just head up the ICW via Pine Island Sound and head out at Red Fish Pass. The North Captiva Beach will be to your right. Enjoy!!

Be careful, this time of year the summer storms sneak up on you. They will swamp a pontoon boat on the open water really fast.

If you go south on the water on the inside of the beach you can head down to lovers key state park and a lot of nice island exploring. The water gets skinny, but in a pontoon you should be good to go.

Ditto what Ponce said. You do not want to get caught in one of those afternoon storms w/ no cabin for cover. If you can get out w/out the kids, head over to the Bridge resturant on a Sunday afternoon for reggae lots of fun...

in the event of a storm, tie up at a restauraunt for cover.

Restaurants... Rumrunners, Cabbage Key, the Bridge in Mantanzas (close to where you are staying) are all great.
