We're planning a trip down to Lavalette, NJ (Barnagett Bay) for the long weekend. Current plans are to leave Friday morning and overnight at Manasquan. As usual, I'm worried about the run in the ocean from Sandy Hook to Manasquan. It's approx 30 mi or 1.5-2.0hrs for us.

The current forecast is 15mph winds from the E, seas 4-6ft.
EDIT for brain fart: Forget about Friday, winds from EAST are B-A-D.
Currently focusing on Saturday morning.

What say you? Remember, I'm traveling with an all girl crew (wife, daughters, female dog).

Do you think it's too rough? I'm thinking we will be fine close to shore.

Actually, Easterly winds are from fetch. BUT I would think it will be OK, coming from land would be worse, IMHO, since it would turn rollers into breakers coming from land.

I have done this run several times. I would actually expect that going offshore about 3 miles would be best. Out that far, you are in about 70 to 100 feet of water, and the waves will be rollers. Further in, you will encounter greater frequency and higher wave heights. But one way or the other, you can figure it out once you are under way. If it is bad close in, try to go out, if it is bad out, try going in.

I am assuming you have at least a 30 footer.

4 -6' can be pretty nasty depending on the frequency. We did the run up from there when we got the new boat, made it about 1/2 mile out of Manasquan and turned around - taking waves over the bow. Easterly wind is not good!

It's beyond us also. Don't forget that even if it is smoother out there because they are rollers, you have to come in somewhere. And, then you have to be concerned with the tide aligning with your arrival.
Take a look at Passageweather.com and their animated wave height predictions. It looks like you will be going into it. By the way, the swell is one aspect. There is also wind chop on top of that. So look at the predominate swell and then add in some wind chop.
Depending on how your boat rides, it can make for a mess.

But if you go would you take some movies and post them :D I can imagine how the crew would feel to see you taking vids while the boat is rocking or (potentially) slamming depending on the period.

I dunnno Chris - we got caught in that kinda snot some years back, as we came back from LBI. Doable in our 34 Express, but FAR from a 'fun' ride. Does Sat AM (say, sleep on the boat and out by 6 - 7) look like a better bet??

Yep, Friday is out! I don't know why I was picturing EASTERLY winds coming from land...DOH!
Gene, we are thinking the same thing, Saturday morning, wake and out by 7am, the latest, into Manasquan by 11am.
The next problem is, there doesn't look to be a good weather window for the trip back.

Actually Monday looks decent according to www.passageweather.com but things don't calm down until late Sat. into Sunday at this point.

Looks like a salty ride to the Channel Club on Friday.

Don't forget the Salt Away!

Good News - The forecast has improved, full steam ahead!
FRI
E WINDS 10 TO 15 KT. SEAS 2 TO 4 FT.
