Giant Humboldt Squid

At least we don't have to worry about those getting into the Delta. If we did, then we would have a real problem. Those squid are more aggressive than any gator could be.

Watching them swim in the ocean is quite a sight! Monterey Aquarium will be having them on display.

My brother and I were surf fishing in Oxnard a couple weeks ago when a very large Humboldt Squid rolled up on the beach. About four feet long and very much alive although injured in some manner or he would have never ended up on the beach. Being the conservationists were are and being aware of the delicate balance of the sea and its creatures, we did the only logical thing. We cut it up and ate some of it. Not having time to marinate and pound it out, it was a little rubbery but still quite delicious. But make no mistake, these things are a nasty, eating machine that will and do eat anything in the sea. They are showing up in huge numbers in So Cal and in waters where they normally are not found. Kind of strange.

i don't see these creatures as dangerous but as a giant calimari steak.
if you should happen to catch one,it would surely make a few hundred meals.

it is better to have loved a short woman than to never have loved a tall.

I'm glad to hear that the big squid make good eating. I love good calamari but just assumed the smaller squid would be tastier. From what I've heard, the Humboldts have to be cleaned, trimmed and cooked just right to be any good.

I wonder if we'll be finding squid bargains in the grocery stores?

If you order the calamari special and the waiter shows up with something that looks like a breaded truck tire, you can bet that the Humboldts have made it into the restaurants.

Just peel the inner and outer layer and the inside is tender. Don't even have to pound it but slicing it thin is best. You can pound it some with one of those pointy faced hammers so breading will stick better. I can't eat it anymore cuz it's almost all cholesterol.

I should go out and get some but what would I do with a couple hundred pounds of squid.

Charlie,

Is that boat fo yours finished yet??? The tuna are here and I'm not sure I have the range in my ProLine. I'm debating bringing the big boat down for a few weeks, but I'd much rather get your decks bloody and slippery ;-) I've got the next couple of weeks off, have a some tuna clones, some trolling rods and a live bait set up. Hell I even have a live bait tank we could throw in there if needed.

Lets go kill some long fins!!!

Heck yeah Dave. I haven't been able to get the people, weather and day coordinated for a trip yet. Last week they started about 40 mi from Monterey...the Salmon were 45 mi(off Pt Reyes) :(

Heard they're at 601 so HMB is the closest for me. Any other reports? How's the highway(Devils Slide)?

Gonna try for some halibut tomorrow(Sun)

Email me so we can set up something.

Got skunked on the halibut today.

Carb/fuel problem so I'll be pulling the plugs and carb manana. Gonna check my weld job on the water ports on the riser/manifolds while I'm at it.

Charlie,

I just got back from the Delta; sorry to hear about the engine problems and lack of halibut. It still sounds better than my weekend, I sanded and varnished the galley sole of our boat. I thought it would be much quicker than it was. With the heat, I probably sweated off a few pounds, which Lord knows I can use, but it's finally done. Over the last few weeks, I've compounded, polished and waxed the entire hull and top sides. I also took all the wood down to bare and re-did all of the brightwork.

Whew! Dave that sounds exhausting! Do you like doing that stuff? I'd rather hire someone good todo it, if my boat had all that.
