I've been heading out fishing with a good friend of mine more and more, and it's time to stop sharing his gear, and get my own. This past weekend we fished for stripers and blues in and around the Merrimack River and Isles of Sholes in MA/NH and then we took a trip to Jeffreys Ledge. We had a great time, but with 4 of us on board and only 3 rods, I can buy my own.
I know there is no "one size fits all", but I'm trying to get as close as possible. Most of our fishing is trolling or bottom fishing, so I'm thinking a conventional reel on a boat rod is best.
I'd like to not break the bank, so I'm trying get something for around $150. I'm thinking of just buying a combo so I don't have to figure out the best rod and reel to go together. Any thoughts?
I was thinking of this 114H Penn setup, but am I better off spending a bit extra for a level wind model?

Also, can someone explain the gear ratios to me? Is lower better (2.8:1 vs 3.23:1)?
Thanks
